When you are thrust into grief, which can be for any type of loss, although people mostly think of losing a person to death, give yourself grace. You might be angry, or unable to believe it happened. You may not be able to motivate yourself to get out of bed. You might find yourself playing the “what if” game, trying to think how you could undo what happened.

There is no timeline. No set order to the stages listed here. Grief is a process… you may go through stages repeatedly. Grief is remembering and loving… a tribute to your loss and the wonderful connection you were able to make.

Myth 1: Talking about su***de increases the chance a person will act on it.

Fact: Talking about su***de may REDUCE, rather than increase, suicidal ideation. It improves mental health-related outcomes and the likelihood that the person will seek treatment. Opening this conversation helps people find an alternative view of their existing circumstances and lets someone in to help.

This is EXACTLY why AI shouldn’t be used as a therapy substitute. I don’t blame this kid… he was being resourceful. But all AI programs need to have safeguards for this… the same as they should if someone asks how to best make a bomb and plant it to kill people. This poor kid needed help, and instead of help, he got a primer in how to feel worse and ultimately how to cover up his suicidal ideation, with a final push into dying by su***de.

PLEASE… if you are feeling this way, talk to you parents or a trusted family member, find a counselor, school social worker, teacher, coworker, neighbor, friend, or a stranger and tell them you need help. There is judgement free help to be had.
