Today marks the end of an era. It is with mixed emotions that we share the news of Graves Drug Store closing its doors as of 5pm, Monday January 15th. After fifty-one years of serving our wonderful customers, the time has come for the permanent closing of Graves Drug Store.
On behalf of the family of Glen Hadaway Sr. and the family of the Graves Drug Store employees we want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who have been a part of this incredible journey. Your support, loyalty, and patronage have meant the world to us. It's been an honor to be a part of this community.
Glen Hadaway moved his family to Emporia in 1972 to embark on an adventure running Graves Drug Store. He was a dedicated businessman who invested 51 years in building and nurturing Graves Drug Store on Commercial Street, the business he held dear.
From its humble beginnings to the thriving establishment it became, Glen poured his passion, hard work, and unwavering commitment into every aspect of the business. His legacy is not just the products or services he provided but the countless lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the community he helped build.
For 51 years he navigated the challenges and celebrated the triumphs, all while embodying the spirit of dedication and resilience. His work ethic was an inspiration to many, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
As we close this chapter, we reflect on the cherished memories, lasting relationships, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. We are immensely proud of the service he provided for filling his customers’ prescriptions, offering a whole host of retail items, and trying to offer the lowest price in town whenever possible. This business model proved to be challenging as the years went on with his competitors breathing down his neck, but Glen refused to let his customers down.
We will forever cherish the memories of your friendly faces, heartfelt stories, and countless moments of trust you've granted us. You've become more than customers; you're our neighbors, our friends, and a family we built together, brick by brick, prescription by prescription.
The passing of our dad has brought this chapter to a close, but the memories, the spirit of Graves Drug Store, and the impact you've had on our lives will remain forever etched in our hearts. We're deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support we've received during this difficult time. Your kind words and shared memories truly serve as a testament to the legacy our dad and Graves Drug built within this community.
While the familiar shelves of Graves Drug will no longer grace Commercial Street, the spirit of compassion, service, and community that thrived within its walls will live on. We encourage you to carry that spirit with you, extending kindness and supporting one another as we have for the past five decades.
Thank you for entrusting us with your care, for filling our lives with laughter and memories, and for being a part of our journey. Over the past few months that we have been liquidating the store you all have shared your stories. This place meant a lot to many, and to us! It was more than just a storefront; it was a hub of connections, a source of joy, and a touchstone for shared experiences. The laughter of children picking out their favorite sweets, the comforting routine of picking up medications for loved ones, or the excitement of finding that perfect, one-of-a-kind gift—all these moments intertwined with the essence of Graves Drug Store.
We are forever grateful for the privilege of serving you.
Thank you, Emporia and surrounding communities, for all the years.
With heartfelt gratitude,
The Family of Glen Hadaway Sr. and the Graves Drug team
