Is Your Massage Therapist Licensed?
Youโre excited, youโve booked a massage at a spa, and youโre looking forward to relaxing and feeling rejuvenated. Itโs been a while since you treated yourself to such a luxury. The wonderful scents of essential oils, and hot towels to your back and feet, your knowledgeable therapist is ready to greet you and provide you with the best massage to loosen your tight muscles.
But is your massage therapist licensed to provide you with a quality, safe, legitimate massage? How do you know if they have the qualifications to actually touch people? How do you know if they have the proper education? Have they had a background check done, to ensure they are allowed to touch people?
One thing is for certain, if they are not licensed, they certainly do not carry liability insurance. You have to be licensed, in order to carry liability insurance. Most states, in the United States, have a licensing board that issues massage therapy licenses. The therapist must apply to the board, initially, submitting their photo, ID proving their identity, education credentials showing a minimum of 500 hours of education, (and many states require more than 500), national testing results, submit fingerprints for a background check, and pay the fees, oftentimes around $200.00.
The license is good for a 2 year period, and then must be renewed. Consumers can and should verify that their massage therapist is licensed. Injuries can happen, easily, with an unlicensed therapist, and it happens, daily.
I am a licensed massage therapist, in three states. I carry liability insurance, and I keep my business legal. I have worked with colleagues who have physically hurt me, and I later found out that they are not, in fact licensed to practice massage therapy, even though they said they were.
I learned an expensive lesson, and missed up to 3 weeks of work, because I was injured by an unlicensed massage therapist. Learn from my experience, verify the license on your stateโs licensing board, before you make your appointment.
Thank you for your time.
