Today Isabela shares about her experiences as a virtual Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) patient. Link in bio👆

Isabela is a high school student who suffered from constant and severe jaw pain, severe jaw tension, limited jaw range of motion, jaw popping and jaw locking. Her symptoms were so severe that she consumed primarily purees and liquids, as chewy, dense, and hard foods caused her symptoms to flare.

After 7 short weeks of virtual Myofunctional Therapy, Isabela’s symptoms have dramatically improved! Isabela no longer experiences jaw pain, jaw popping or jaw locking. She’s even back to eating the dense and crunchy foods she once enjoyed! Isabela’s success is the result of her deep commitment to home programming and changing some habits that were reinforcing her symptoms.

My greatest privilege is empowering patients with tools and strategies to facilitate their own healing🙏

Exciting news! Last week I had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Bob Perkins of the TMJ and More Podcast to discuss everything related to dental and facial development and Myofunctional Therapy. Link in bio✨

Bob specializes in TMJ, chronic pain management and orthotropics. Bob has seen, first hand, the benefits OMT provides for patients with TMJ, low tongue posture, and chronic mouth breathing habits. He’s also seen the ways healthy tongue and swallowing postures can profoundly change a child’s teeth and face!

Bob and I discuss everything from ancient breathing principles to suck pouches, sippy cups, baby led weaning and posture.

“If every child was screened for a myofunctional disorder early in life, we would live in a far healthier world.”

Today Elise shares about her and her son’s experiences as Myofuncitonal Therapy patients. Link in bio😊

Elise started therapy with a variety of TMJ symptoms including jaw pain, limited jaw range of motion, jaw clicking, jaw popping, and low tongue posture. After one month of therapy, Elise noticed a major shift in her symptoms. After two months of therapy, Elise no longer experiences any of her TMJ symptoms!

Elise's son, Darwin, started therapy with different concerns including habitual mouth breathing, teeth grinding, jaw clenching, poor quality sleep and low tongue posture. After two months of therapy, Darwin exclusively nasal breathes, has healthy tongue posture, no longer clenches or grinds his teeth, and experiences much better quality sleep! Mom has seen positive changes in his behavior too!

HOW we eat, breathe, and swallow is just as important as WHAT we eat, breathe, and swallow. Check out Elise’s story (link in bio) to learn more!

Happy New Year patients, colleagues, families and friends✨ I’ve taken a much needed break from social media over the past 3 months and am coming back with some strategies and intention for greater balance. It’s a journey for sure☺️

To kick off 2021, I wanted to share one of my favorite read from the past year. It’s called “Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calm, Happier and More Secure Kids” by Kim John Payne. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this beautiful book. Reading it has been like a trip to Big Sur after months of quarantine🌅

Kim has a background as a social worker, Waldorf educator and therapist. He does a beautiful job explaining the ways that minimizing clutter, establishing routines and schedules, “scheduling breaks” in our busy schedules and developing a greater sense of mindful presence create the context for our children to blossom (and in my opinion, for our own adult souls to blossom too). His insights are practical, positive and extremely accessible.

Happy New Year friends! May it be one of a slowed pace with attention and time set towards the things and people who bring you life and vitality🌻

Everyone wants more intricate oxide, especially during a viral pandemic!

Nitric oxide (NO) is released in the nasal airways in humans during inspiration through the nose. NO activates ciliary movement and mucus secretion, which can increase removal of dust and viral particles from the respiratory tract.

In humans, higher nasal levels of exhaled NO are associated with fewer symptoms of the common cold, suggesting that nasally produced NO represents one of the body’s endogenous defense mechanisms against viruses in the airway... yet another reason why establishing functional nasal breathing is of vital importance!

It takes a family to break an oral habit!👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

I’m honored to work with wonderful parents and caregivers who are ready to support their kiddos with lots of love and encouragement. Often times, the key to eliminating the habit is just adding a few tweaks and tricks to a parent’s toolbox!🛠

Did you know tongue thrusting and mouth breathing can run in families?! Meet my little brother, Deven. He was one adorable little mouth breather!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At age 6, Deven was diagnosed with a tongue thrust and prescribed a ‘tongue crib’ - a metal, cage-like device that formed a wall a few millimeters behind his front teeth to prevent tongue thrusting😣 The device was extremely uncomfortable and made eating and speaking very challenging and painful. While it barricaded his tongue from thrusting forward, it didn’t teach him any new, healthy habits.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unfortunately, my parents were led to believe that this was the only way to remediate a tongue thrust. If my mom had known about Myofunctional Therapy, and that it centers on positive reinforcement, behavior modification and exercises versus a cumbersome appliance, she would’ve opted-out of the tongue crib!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s important to know that you have options as a patient. It’s also important that patients, even as young as 4 or 5 years old, understand WHY they’re in therapy and HOW it will impact their health.

Did you know that the tongue is a ‘gateway’ between meridian points along one of the body’s major energy channels in Traditional Chinese Medicine? The benefits of nasal breathing and good tongue posture aren’t cutting-edge, sexy new science. Masters have known the value of this practice for thousands of years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the Tao Te Ching, an ancient Taoist text, author Lao Tzu explains that “the breath inhaled through the mouth is called ‘Ni Chi’ (or ‘adverse breath’)... be careful not to have the breath in through the mouth.”

10/19/2020

Myofunctional Therapy can significantly improve orthodontic outcomes😁 When we teach the tongue where to go, the teeth can follow much more easily (and often more quickly)!

Open lip posture may be a cool selfie and modeling trend but lips that are constantly open lead to mouth breathing, and mouth breathing isn’t cool for your health!👄😬

Some of my younger patients say “well I only take pictures with my lips open” but remember that repetitive behaviors create entrenched habits. In a world where 93 million selfies are posted each day, this is significant!

Express yourself as you feel led but be aware of behaviors repetitive becoming habitual. Sealed and relaxed lips, the tongue resting against the palate, and quiet, steady nasal breathing are foundational to good health and longevity✨

Many of my environmentally-sensitive patients have experienced extra congestion and respiratory concerns during the recent wildfires.

Nasal breathing is our body's greatest defense against pathogens and airborne toxins 💪👃💪 but wildfire smoke contains toxic nanoparticles that even our sophisticated nasal passages can't filter😣

I recommend the following strategies to decrease congestion and improve respiratory efficiency while air quality is deemed harmful:

☑️Daily nasal rinses with NetiPot and distilled salt water solution

☑️Regular medication use (if prescribed/recommended by physician for allergies, asthma, etc.)

☑️Close all windows in the home. Invest in an air filter and run the air filter in the home's areas of most frequent use (e.g. office during school/work hours and bedroom during sleeping hours)

☑️Keep bedroom doors closed and do not allow animals in the bedroom, as their coats carry many of the toxic nanoparticles currently circulating in the atmosphere

☑️Place a large bedspread/blanket over sheets and pillows and remove  this covering at night, before sleep (to reduce dust exposure)

☑️Shower and wash your hair before getting into bed; this ensures that the bed and pillows are free of smoke, dander and pollen particles

☑️Wear a mask outdoors (some patients with sensitive eyes also benefit from wearing sunglasses)

☑️Stay indoors when air quality is deemed harmful

☑️Breath through your nose!😊

Wishing you and your families health, wellness and peace of mind in these trying times🙏
