Self Care Monday (4/5)
You’ve heard of Self Care Sunday, but here at Restore we know that Monday can really shake things up. Take some time for yourself this week and respond to the question below in the comments!
Mondays can be rough for everyone. After a bit of a break on the weekend, waking up early to start the week is a big change of pace. Sometimes our weekends can be just as busy as the week, running errands, seeing friends and family, and completing the tasks that we may not have finished from the week before. Aside from doing all these things, getting a good night’s sleep is the best way to get a jumpstart on your week. Enter feeling refreshed, and ready to tackle what is to come. Start with a positive attitude. If you have to wake up early, try and go to bed a little earlier. If you run late nights, try and make space in the morning for an extra 10-15 minutes of rest. It’s amazing how our bodies reset with sleep and how aches and pains can be relieved with a good 8-10 hour long break. So this week make time for you to recover, and you might find how much farther you can go.
What time do you fall asleep?

For students, these past few weeks have been filled with exams, projects and papers. Maybe you or a loved one were lucky enough to take a break or are having spring break in the near future. Even so, midterms and finals are approaching. For non-students, this time of year is also difficult. We have completed one year in Covid lockdown and it’s tiring. Your routine may seem monotonous, and we all miss the spontaneity of normal life. Work can become overwhelming when we aren’t motivated to do it. The more work you have, the less you want to do it. This week, try making a list like the one above. It can organize your thoughts, and lay out the days ahead. It feels good to check off a box when you’ve completed a task. You can use a paper or electronic agenda, which are really helpful in our zoom world. Another great idea is to screenshot a picture of your list, and make it the homescreen on your phone or laptop. Everytime you pick up your device, you are reminded of what you have accomplished today. Try achieving your goals this week and reward yourself for each item you cross off your list. You may find that treating yourself for each task will motivate you to get your work done.
If you were able to travel anywhere in the world (in non Covid times), where would you go?

Wow, here we are with the last principle of Intuitive Eating: Honor Your Health with Gentle Nutrition. This principle is saved for last, not because it is less important, but because only once you have rejected the diet mentality and made peace with food you can learn information about nutrition and health. Any lingering diet mentality thoughts can cause you to take nutrition advice and turn it into another diet or practice unhealthy food habits. Gentle nutrition means making food choices that honor your health and taste buds while making you feel well at the same time. This is not another set of rigid rules that often come with diets. Gentle nutrition is flexible! Remember we are not striving for perfection, but progress! You don’t have to eat perfectly to be healthy. You won't gain weight or get a disease from one meal, one snack, or one day of eating. What matters is what you eat consistently over a long period of time. Many people think that if they let themselves be intuitive and eat whatever they want, they will lose control and gain weight. However, there are several studies that show food restriction is associated with weight gain and Intuitive eating is associated with improved nutrient intake, less risk of developing an eating disorder, having a wider variety of food, and lower body mass.

A good song can make you feel like you’re in a music video. So roll with it! Turn up your favorite tune and dance around your house. Pull in a friend or loved one to jam out with you. Music is therapeutic and can always make you smile. Sing at the top of your lungs if you know the words. If you’re in a public space and don’t want to draw attention to yourself, plug in and tap your feet under your desk. Maybe mouth the words and sing in your head. Either way, enjoy a song that makes you feel good! If you don’t have one in mind already, here are some hype songs to try:
Mr. Blue Sky -Electric Light Orchestra
Counting Stars -One Republic
Take a Walk -Passion Pit
Boss B*tch -Doja Cat
Truth Hurts -Lizzo

Welcome to principle 9 of intuitive eating: Exercise- Feel the Difference. Your relationship with exercising is just as important as your relationship with food when you are an intuitive eater. Take a moment to think about why you exercise and how it makes you feel? And if you don’t that’s totally fine! It has nothing to do with your worth and value as a person! If you are trying to improve your relationship with exercise and trying to figure out how you can include it in your lifestyle in a joyful and sustaining way that feels good to you then you are in the right place. Let’s get started.

Life is busy. It always has been. Even if your office is now inside your home, the amount of work we do each day hasn’t slowed down. We are constantly connected to our work. We get emails, text messages, and calls. The divide between work and life has become fuzzy. This week, take a step back. In the morning, instead of immediately checking your email, or answering a message, try putting your phone/laptop/tablet aside. Make yourself a coffee. (Or a tea or whatever you like to drink in the morning). It doesn’t have to be anything different than the usual, but take 20 minutes for yourself. Let yourself wake up to the sounds of nature, your family, or complete silence. Sit with yourself, completely isolated from the hectic workday you may have ahead of you. Clearing your mind and starting the day off with some introspection will lead you to have a more productive and positive day.
So this week, make yourself a drink, find your favorite chair, and wake up slow.
What do you drink in the morning?

Retail therapy is an effective way to feel happy. Maybe you’re proud of a deal you got, or are excited to use whatever you spent your hard earned money on. Buying a plant is buying a responsibility. You have to take care of a plant to keep it healthy and thriving. You have to do research; how much sunlight does it need? How frequently do you water it? You have to get the right pot for it, make sure that it isn’t too cramped or too large. You have to remember to water it, which is arguably the hardest part of plant ownership. But here’s the thing-- when you take care of that plant you feel proud. When you can successfully keep something happy and green it feels good. Plants can actually improve your concentration and productivity by up to 15 percent! So this week, invest in a plant and some positive vibes!
Do you have a favorite plant or flower?

We all experience anxiety, loneliness, anger, and boredom throughout life, especially now during these challenging times. Many people turn to food to cope with their feelings and emotions hoping it will make them feel better. This is because food is comforting, pleasurable and reliable. It’s always there for us in times of pain. However, food can’t fix any of these feelings. It might feel soothing at that very moment, but it won’t solve the problem. In fact, emotional eating can make you feel worse because you will have to deal with the discomfort of overeating and of course deal with the root cause of your emotions.

Spring is coming! March is upon us and those out in the cold parts of the country are just starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If you are blessed enough to live in an area that is beautiful all year long (looking at you southern California), it still means new changes and activities. This hopefully may be relief from this year-long winter battle with COVID-19. Enjoy spring today, and take a bike ride. Maybe bring a friend (wear masks and social distance!) and take a trip around the neighborhood. It’ll feel good to spend time with someone you maybe haven’t seen in a while. Go for a short ride, a long ride, take breaks to enjoy the scenery, or maybe have a destination in mind. Maybe you don’t have a bike-- that’s okay! Take a walk or rollerblade or skateboard! No matter how you roll or where you are going, enjoy the journey. Close the tabs that are open in your mind, and focus on what is happening now. Nothing else matters for the 10, 20 minute or hours that you spend outside. So this week, enjoy the sun, catching up with a friend, the open road on a bike and the beautiful present.
Do you know how to ride a bike?

We often view food as a source of fuel and necessity for our body but forget about the pleasure derived from eating the foods we love. This is especially common with chronic dieters who have learned through their experiences that food is the enemy and have lost their awareness of how important it is to have a pleasurable and satisfying eating experience. Many people believe that if they allow themselves to enjoy their food, it will lead to uncontrollable food cravings. However, this is not true. It is actually the opposite. When you deprive yourself from your favorite foods it usually leads to bingeing and intense cravings. So, don’t be afraid to enjoy your food!

Self Care Monday (2/22)
You’ve heard of Self Care Sunday, but here at Restore we know that Monday can really shake things up. Take some time for yourself this week and respond to the question below in the comments!
You may think there are things that you “HAVE” to do today. You “HAVE” to do work. You “HAVE” to run errands or go to class or the gym. That’s BS. The only thing you “HAVE” to do today is get through today. Whether that means completing your responsibilities, or calling in sick and giving yourself a day to recharge. No matter what, you HAVE to take care of yourself today. So take a moment to reflect, where can you make time for yourself? If you can’t think of a space in your day, try saying no. Say no to working on that project today, say no to picking up coffee, say no to whatever it is that makes you feel overwhelmed. Say no to someone else, and say yes to self care.
What do you do to relax?
