This week is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week. This last year has been such a hard and complex time to be a mom, be pregnant and navigate the early stages of motherhood and having baby. I say that as not only a therapist who has supported my clients during this time but also as I myself had my 2nd baby and found myself managing motherhood, career and pregnancy in a pandemic. There is so much I can say and hope to say on all this. But perhaps the most important is that if this has been hard, please know you are not alone and you are doing so great. You are taking care of yourself your baby during a huge life transition not to mention a pandemic. You are strong and resilient and it’s also ok to ask for help.

🤍1 in 5 women have a mental health problem during pregnancy or the first year following birth.
🤍Over 75% of women do not get diagnosed or receive adequate treatment or support for their mental health during this time period
🤍Therapy and mental health care can help and empower women to get resources, feel like themselves again and enjoy the new stages of motherhood.

In the wake of 2020, many of us are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted. Now, more than ever, we need to find ways to nurture our well-being in order to thrive personally and professionally. I am so thrilled that my friend and colleague Jacinta Jimenez’s book “The Burnout Fix” came out last week. She talks about science based strategies on how to overcome burnout and build greater resilience. Excited for this amazing resource.

It’s okay if you feel anxious. It’s normal to have anxiety coming up right now regardless of whether you are someone who often experiences anxiety or not. Just because anxiety is there does not mean that it is taking over or in control. Also, having realistic expectations that the goal may not be how not to have anxiety or make it a level 0 but instead how to manage where it is at or how to bring it down 1 or 2 levels if it feels unmanageable.
▪️
If your anxiety is feeling overwhelming...
Ask yourself what is my anxiety level of a scale of 0-10. What may help me take it down 1 level? For example if your anxiety is at a 8 what can bring it down to 7?

We are a community and in this together. If you haven’t read this post and caption from you can check it out.
🔹
I will be trying to share some tips, encouragement and support here and in my stories from myself or others that I have found helpful. There are a lot of great resources out there.
🔹
Also, if you are feeling overwhelmed or like it’s too much then it’s also ok to take a break from social media or turn off posts for accounts that don’t feel helpful or supportive to you right now.

There is so much happening in the world right now and we are all dealing with many unknowns. If you are feeling overwhelmed or need a break, here are a few steps to take.
1. Take a deep breath. In through the nose and out through the mouth. Repeat. Repeat again if necessary. Feel more grounded with each breath.
2. Check in - How are you feeling? What emotions are present? How does your body feel? Where does it feel it? What do you need to be reminded of in this moment?
3. Give yourself permission. Maybe it’s permission to take a break, permission to feel emotions like worry, frustration or even relief. Maybe it’s permission to let go of unrealistic expectations. Permission to not look at the news or social media. Permission to text a friend for support. Take a moment to give yourself what you need.

What does the arena look like for you right now? How are you showing up and being brave? Arenas can be in so many parts of our life whether it’s building our business, taking a promotion, motherhood, trying to conceive after miscarriage or making new friends after we moved. It doesn’t matter what the arena is, to show up and dare greatly means to be vulnerable, dig into our values and take risk. Love this quote from and illustration from . Getting to use Brené Brown’s work as a therapist is one of my favorite things.

You are worthy. Your worthiness is not on the line nor does it need to be proven. You deserve to give yourself the same love and compassion you give to others. You are enough.

It’s ok to not have it figured out and it’s ok and normal for it to take time. Sometimes we just want to jump to the next chapter or to wave a magic wand and be fixed. But that is not how growth, progress, change or healing happen. It’s bit by bit or sometimes in a moment of looking back you get clarity on all the progress that has been made.

Living with health challenges means experiencing the ups and downs of diagnoses and symptoms in a body that we can’t swap out. There’s no escaping this body. And there’s something very humbling about that fact.
So, since our bodies are here with us for the long haul… what would it look like to invite them to join us in friendship for this wild ride?
It’s common to think of our bodies as “good” or “bad” or even try not to think about them altogether. Many of us haven’t been taught what it would look like to create conscious, loving partnerships with our bodies. So there’s something powerful about throwing the “good” and “bad” labels out and inviting our bodies to be our friends.
Join me and for a continuation of this powerful discussion as we reflect and share insights and stories about our own highs and lows in relationship with our bodies and the health challenges they experience.
You’ll have a chance to watch this live conversation from the comfort of your own home, and even participate (if you’d like) by typing questions and weighing in on the discussion. Please note that you will not be on video—only the hosts will appear on screen during the event.

It was such an honor to be on the podcast and share my story about navigating chronic health challenges including a rare blood disorder and endometriosis. When I first received the diagnosis it felt like my body was not working or had betrayed me and it was something I had to deal with. Eventually (and by that I mean it took years) I had a realization that my body was on my team and working with me to overcome these health challenges and it had been doing amazing work for years.
