Family Practice is a medical specialty with three years of residency training beyond medical school. Founded in 1978 by James Hay, MD North Coast Family Medical Group has grown over the past 40 years and has become one of the most recognized and respected practices in San Diego’s North County.

Dr. James Hay has practiced Family Medicine since 1978. He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Pennsylvania. His residency was at the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton. He is board certified and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Hay is a member of many professional organizations, including the San Diego County Medical Society, and the California Academy of Family Practice. He was president of the California Medical Association. He has received the AMA Physicians Recognition Award every year since 1977. He is active in local and state political action and enjoys running, travel and great restaurants. Dr. Hay and his wife, Tricia, have two grown children and live in Del Mar.
Richard Payne, MD
Dr. Richard Payne received his medical degree from the University of California at San Diego in 1982. He graduated from residency training in Family Practice at Santa Monica Hospital in 1985 and entered private practice at North Coast Family Medical Group. Dr. Payne is Board Certified in Family Practice, has recertified in 1992 and 1999, and was awarded the status of Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He is a former President of the San Diego Academy of Family Physicians and continues to serve on the board of directors. Dr. Payne is committed to the healing and wellness of his patients through motivating lifestyle change and utilizing the latest advances in medical science. He enjoys teaching medical students at UCSD as a volunteer Clinical Instructor. Dr. Payne, his wife Cathy, and their three children, enjoy being active in St. John’s church community and love living the Leucadia lifestyle.
Craig Duck, MD
Dr. Craig Duck joined North Coast Family Medical Group in 2002 after practicing in the Santa Monica/Pacific Palisades area. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at UCSD, where he met his wife. He studied at UCLA School of Medicine, then attended the West Coast’s premier Family Practice residency at Santa Monica-UCLA. Dr. Duck emphasizes preventative care, and has special interests in Women’s Health, Dermatology, and office-based procedures. His hobbies include ice hockey, cooking, and collecting comic books.
Amy Kakimoto, MD
Dr. Amy Kakimoto joined North Coast Family Medical Group in June 2008. She received her Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA and completed her medical training at UCSD School of Medicine. She received her residency training in Family Medicine at UCSD. Dr. Kakimoto is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. She particularly enjoys caring for athletes of all ages and types, arthritis care, pediatric care, as well as Women’s Health and many in-office procedures. She enjoys traveling to new places, cooking and spending time with her husband and two children.
Christine Clotfelter, MD
Dr. Christine Clotfelter joined North Coast Family Medical Group in 2012. Born and raised in San Diego, she obtained her bachelor of arts degree in Spanish from USD. She attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine for medical school, then returned home to San Diego to complete her family medicine residency at UCSD. She is board certified in family medicine, fluent in Spanish, and especially enjoys women’s health. She loves swimming, travel, and spending time outdoors with her husband and three young children.
Susan Glockner, MD
Dr. Susan M. Glockner is board certified in Family Practice and Sports Medicine. She began her career with NCFMG in 1992 while undergoing her Sports Medicine Fellowship at UCSD. Previously, she graduated magna cm laude from Princeton University, attended UCSD Medical School, and completed her family practice residency at Santa Monica Hospital. She is passionate about holistic approaches to care, blending medicine with lifestyle change. She is a past president of the California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation and has been a volunteer instructor at UCSD Medical School.
From 2007 to 2017, she worked part-time in community clinics while raising her children. Now that they’ve moved to the East Coast, she and her husband have plenty of time to spoil their dog as empty nesters. Dr. Glockner and her husband have lived in Encinitas for more than 25 years, although she gets away often to explore through travel and outdoor adventures such as skiing, backpacking and SCUBA diving. In her free time, she enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and training for triathlons.
Kelly Sales, PA-C
Kelly Sales is a certified Physician Assistant who enjoys treating the entire family, from infancy to adulthood. She graduated from Weill Cornell Medical School Physician Assistant Program in 2007, receiving honors for her clinical work. She moved from the East coast to California in 2007, and has worked in family medicine and pediatrics since then. Kelly joined North Coast Family Medical Group in 2015. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, and the California Academy of Physician Assistants. She enjoys hiking, snowboarding, travel and above all, spending time with her husband, two young children, and friends.
Lindsay Eggen, PA-C
Lindsay Eggen is a certified physician assistant who joined North Coast Family Medical Group in 2015. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of San Diego and a Master’s degree in Health Psychology from San Diego State University. Lindsay decided to pursue a career in medicine and went on to graduate with a Master’s degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California Physician Assistant Primary Care Program. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the California Association of Physician Assistants. Lindsay lives in Carlsbad with her husband and young daughters and enjoys family time at the beach.
