It's pretty easy to find fear-based claims about the dangers of yoga. Check out the example below, which featured in the New York Times. However, the scientific evidence overwhelmingly suggests that yoga is one of the safest forms of movement! Yoga does not lead to more injury than other forms of physical activity.
Specifically, a 2018 systematic review and two subsequent observational studies have all found that yoga-related serious injuries (as in, requiring discontinuation of a yoga class or discontinued yoga use generally) are very rare. Instead, most yoga-related injuries are mild and transient, like minor strains and sprains.
All these studies have concluded that, given yogaโs benefits, there is no need to discourage yoga practice for healthy or ill people.
Of course all physical activity carries some risk of injury โ after all, it's physical! But yoga appears to be one of the safer forms of physical activity you can do!
