One thing I’ve noticed when working with individuals living with Parkinson’s is that the nervous system often tends to stay in a more sympathetic state — the body’s stress or “fight-flight” response.

This can be influenced by several factors including reduced movement, stress, disrupted sleep, digestive challenges, and the changes in dopamine levels that affect the body’s chemistry.

When the nervous system stays in this heightened state for too long, it can make the body feel more tense, uncomfortable, and fatigued.

Meditation and breathwork can help individuals self-regulate the nervous system and gently guide the body back toward a calmer, more balanced state.

These practices may help support:

• emotional steadiness
• clearer thinking
• improved sleep
• better digestion
• a greater sense of calm in the body

I’m partnering with the Parkinson’s Foundation and this is the last in a four part series. Class is held in my office and designed to support individuals living with Parkinson’s and their loved ones.

t’s essential to regulate our nervous system daily — and sometimes several times throughout the day.

Take a moment to notice how you’re feeling. If you find yourself in a fight, flight, or freeze response, it’s important to pause and allow the body to reset.

A simple place to start is with the breath.
Pause.
Take a slow breath in… and exhale gently.

These small moments help the body shift away from a sympathetic stress response and back toward the parasympathetic state, where the body can rest, digest, and recover.

Sometimes the nervous system needs a little extra support learning how to access this calmer state.

In my practice, I also use microcurrent therapy with the Acuscope, along with specific acupuncture points along the spine and surrounding areas, to help calm and regulate the nervous system.

Learning how to regulate the nervous system is one of the most powerful tools we have for supporting both physical and emotional well-being.

Meditation is more than simply trying to think of nothing.

Meditation becomes much more meaningful when we practice with an intention — something we would like to cultivate or support in our lives. I often recommend focusing on what you would like to accomplish and what the desired end result looks like, rather than placing your attention on the problem itself.

When the mind focuses on a positive direction, the body and nervous system often respond in a more supportive way.

There are many different forms of meditation, and each person may resonate with a different method.

Some examples include:

• Visualization meditation — gently scanning the body from head to toe, relaxing each area and imagining peaceful, clear light moving through the body.

• Breath meditation — focusing on slow, steady breathing, allowing the inhale and exhale to calm the mind and nervous system.

• Chanting or mantra meditation — repeating a word, sound, or phrase that helps bring focus and inner calm.

• Universal or healing meditation — connecting with a sense of harmony, balance, and healing energy.

Meditation is a daily practice for me. I begin each morning with meditation and often take a few minutes before bed as well. Sometimes I’ll pause briefly during the day to reset the mind and calm the nervous system.

There are many ways to meditate, and I’d love to help you discover a method that works well for you.

Our body is designed to move.

Each joint plays an important role in supporting posture, balance, coordination, and strength. When joints become stiff, weak, or unstable, it can affect the way the entire body moves and functions.

For individuals living with Parkinson’s, joint stiffness can accelerate over time. Many people begin to experience a forward-hunched posture, which can lead to discomfort, reduced mobility, and sometimes less motivation to move because the body simply doesn’t feel good.

Intentional movement can help support posture, maintain joint mobility, and activate the muscles that help stabilize the body.

When we move well, we often feel better physically and mentally, which can help restore confidence and motivation.

I’m partnering with the Parkinson’s Foundation to host a series of four classes at my office designed to support individuals living with Parkinson’s and their loved ones.

JOINT INTEGRITY

Qi Gong is a powerful practice that supports both nervous system regulation and joint health.

As we age, joints can naturally become stiffer, more arthritic, and sometimes painful. Gentle, controlled movement helps maintain mobility and encourages the natural lubrication of the joints, which can reduce stiffness and discomfort.

Qi Gong uses slow, gliding movements and mindful activation to help the body move more efficiently while calming the nervous system at the same time.

When we move less, we can also become neuromuscularly disconnected from our bodies, meaning we may not activate the proper muscles that stabilize and support our joints.

Small daily movements can help restore that connection, improve stability, and support overall joint integrity.

If you’re curious about your own movement patterns, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to set up a screening of your joint mobility and stability and share a few simple movements you can practice to strengthen and support your joints.

Healthy joints should be stable, mobile, and strong.

One thing I’ve been noticing more frequently in the office is how many people struggle with neck, shoulder, low back, hip, and foot issues. Many of these common ailments can often be prevented or improved with simple daily movement and joint care.

Supporting joint integrity means keeping the joints stable, maintaining mobility, and strengthening the muscles that support them.

It’s especially important to keep the spine healthy and mobile. The nerves exit the spine and travel to every muscle in the body, so maintaining spinal movement helps support overall neuromuscular function.

Before working out, begin with dynamic movement to activate the body.

Try movements like:

• Qi squats or slow spinal rolling to mobilize the spine
• Standing on one leg while moving the arms to challenge balance and coordination
• Single-leg hinge with a gentle twist to activate the hips and core

These movements help wake up the nervous system and prepare the body for activity.

Stretching is best done after your workout, when the body is warm and the muscles are ready to lengthen and release.

This is also why Pilates can be so beneficial. Pilates focuses on spinal health, core strength, posture, and joint integrity — helping the body move in a more supported and coordinated way.

At your next appointment, I’d be happy to help you come up with a few simple movements you can practice throughout the day to support your joints and overall mobility.

You are what you eat.

The foods we choose each day directly influence our energy, digestion, brain function, and overall well-being.

Try to become more mindful of what you are eating throughout the day. Preparing most of your meals at home allows you to choose cleaner ingredients and know exactly what is going into your food.

Whenever possible, shop for or grow organic, pesticide-free, whole foods that support the body rather than burden it.

As spring approaches, it’s a wonderful time to visit your local produce markets and explore the seasonal foods that are becoming available.

Seasonal produce is often fresher, more nutrient-dense, and typically featured in larger displays or offered at better prices because it is naturally in abundance.

Preparing your own meals whenever possible allows you to know exactly where your food is coming from and how it is prepared. Eating out frequently can expose us to foods that are often high in sodium and additives, which can contribute to a number of health concerns.

Cooking with clean, whole ingredients and seasonal foods is one of the simplest ways to support overall health and well-being.

Hydration is equally important. Aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces of purified water each day.

A great place to start is first thing in the morning. Before your coffee, drink about 12 ounces of water to help replenish hydration after the body naturally dehydrates overnight.

Small daily habits like nourishing foods and proper hydration can make a meaningful difference in how we feel and function each day.
