After 35 years in practice, this is something I see often.
Natural teeth expand and contract with temperature and use — mercury fillings don’t.

Over time, that mismatch creates stress.
Cracks form. Teeth weaken.

Add the fact that mercury releases v***r continuously, and you begin to understand why these materials were never ideal for the human mouth — and why removal has to be done thoughtfully and carefully.
