Nana’s Off Her meds Alternative wellness. Herbal alternatives for good health I am an herbalist. I Had the dream since that time in my life. I retired in 2015 to Hawaii.

I was introduced to the world of herbal remedies in 1984 when I worked at a local Health Food Store. I moved back to Upstate NY in 2019. In the winter of 2023 - 2024 I had an opportunity to help my old employer out and earned some extra money. I invested in some herbs, a couple of natural healing books, and supplies I would need and started making Herbal remedies for family and friends, who were my test market. They loved my products and encouraged me to offer them to my community.

Updates! updates! updates! As far as my previously discussed, Comfrey oops fiasco, after almost 2 weeks of working to get a final product. These are my findings. The first little glass in the picture, on the left, is Comfrey that I put in my coffee, grinder, added a small amount of 80 proof, vodka, which turned to sticky gum, and ground the mess in my big blender (which did nothing to break it up), added EVOO, and heated infused in my slow cooker at 150° for eight hours. The middle little shot class was one of the sticky gum ones with a small amount of 80 proof of vodka as an extractor which I added enough 100 proof vodka to cover a sticky gum, totally plus about an inch, left it for two days, that sticky gum broke up nicely so at that point, I filled the rest of the jar up with EVOO and infused in my slow cooker at 150° for eight hours. The one to the right I ground up, covered with EVOO and heat infused in the crockpot at 150° for 12 hours. The one on the far right is closest to the results. I’m looking for a comfrey oil.

The one I had that I had juiced up was infused the traditional way, by putting comfort in a jar and covering out with EVOO a1:5 ratio and shake it, when I remembered, let sit for 3 months. The color of that batch was a lighter yellow than either if these. My conclusion: the one on the far right is the winner and this is how I will be infusing comfrey oil from here on.

Update: I added a video of the comfrey, on the far left in the still picture, that I strained and put in a mason jar to be used in the next salve I make with comfrey as an ingredient

I didn’t get back to (what I am now referring to as my experiment) the comfrey fiasco. So for now that saga continues. However, today’s Project has been to work on my Before Sun Spray and Lotion. Pretty proud of myself it turned out very good, exactly as I expected it would I thought maybe getting the right consistency for both the lotion and for the spray, without compromising ingredients and effectiveness, would be a bit of an issue, but it wasn’t. I made a small batch as my experiment, so now I can get more of what I need to make a larger batch to put in my store for the upcoming spring sale in Nana’s Off Her Meds Apothecary and Boutique. Next project comes my Aftersun TLC lotion and maybe a spray, not sure yet.
Update: i have finished my Before Sun and After Sun TLC in spray bottles. GREAT STUFF!!!

Oops my bad. Comfrey fiasco. See comments for latest update.
Let me tell you about my latest oops! I got some dried organic comfy leaf from Frontier Co-Op. I need some Comfy oil so I decided to do the quick oil method. I ground an ounce of the dried comfy into a powder, put it in a quart mason jar, I added a half a shot of 80 proof, vodka, mixed it up real good to incorporate all the vodka through the ground comfrey. I put it on the counter and let it set for 24 hours. When I want to take it out for the next step, there was just this very hard, gummy glop in the bottom of the jar. I was mortified. I tried for half a day to break that glop up, I even tried putting it in my Ninja bullet and grinding it. Nothing, still a very hard gummy glop. I did some research and come to find our there are a few herbs that this method won’t work with. “Comfrey turned into a "gummy lop" (a slimy, gel-like substance) because the alcohol in the vodka caused the mucilage (a complex carbohydrate/sugar) within the plant to precipitate out of the liquid and solidify”.

Up on more research and I found that if I added more of a higher proof vodka, it would start to break up. I spent one whole day, adding 100pf vodka to the slimmy mess until I finally got it all broken up. I’ve done added 8ozs of oil. Shook it up. I am going to warm it tomorrow. After all this I really think I am going to have a superior oil. I’ll update you as soon as I know.

In the first picture you’ll see a big clap in the bottom of the jar. This was oil added before I tried to break it up. The second picture is after I soaked it in 100 proof vodka. I broke it all up and then put oil in it.

I am making a great Before Sun skin product. Pretend, for a minute, you’re by a poolside. You want to put on your skin Before Sun. Do you imagine applying it via a beach bag size spray bottle or salve tin? Both would have the same great herbs, oils, and properties.

I hadn’t posted anything in a while. A lot going on here. Winter is almost over. I’m getting ready to set up my store for the spring and summer. I am adding some new products, I have redesigned my logo, and I’m creating a webpage for Nana’s Off Her Meds.

I have been experimenting with making balms, butters, and lotions since my tallow obsession started a few years ago, searching for a great moisturizer specifically for dry cracked hands and feet. I had a cognition of a formula today and decided to make it, on the fly. I tried it. It is my best formula so far. It can also be used as a body butter. I will try it out for the next few days to see if it will work as i hope it will, and come back with a report.

Update: it smells very nice. Last night before bed I put this on my aging face, very dry hands, and very dry scaly cracked feet. It felt great! It went on silky smooth, and absorbed pretty quickly. When I got up this morning my face and hands felt velvety soft and my feet were much softer and less rough and scaly. I put some more on a couple of hours later (face, hands, & feet again). I feel so confident, that I finally have found the formula that works the way I need it to work, that I made a double batch today to give to my test market. (They love testing my new products).
