Have you ever thought about setting a one word resolution?

A one word resolution is the practice of choosing a single, powerful word to serve as a guide or mantra for the year. This word is meant to guide your mindset, actions, and decisions. Your word helps you to focus on how you want to be or feel, rather than what you want to achieve or accomplish.

What’s one word you’re carrying into the new year?

As we step into 2026, we asked NAMI staff one simple question:
What’s one word you’re carrying into the new year?

These words reflect intention, care, and hope — reminders that growth doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful.

Here’s to moving forward together, one word at a time. 💙

“Healthy coping mechanisms throughout the holidays include communication, respite, and socialization,” says Mary Whitecombe-Turbush, director of Broome County Office for the Aging.

Broome County supports the needs of seniors with several local senior centers, which provide a free avenue to socialize and often serve hot meals, offering both companionship and nutrition for older residents.

In Broome County, older adults can call the Broome County Office for the Aging Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to receive information and support. The number is 607-778-2411.

You can also learn about statewide resources and the Virtual Senior Center by visiting the New York State Office for the Aging website, https://www.getsetup.io/partner/nystate

Greg Olsen, director of the New York State Office for the Aging, noted that in May 2023 the U.S. surgeon general declared loneliness and social isolation a public health epidemic.
