A Gratitude Journal: A Path to Healing After Loss

Have you ever felt like the weight of grief is too heavy to bear? The loss of a loved one, especially a child, can leave a void that seems impossible to fill. It's a pain that can be overwhelming, isolating, and often feels unending. But there is hope. There is a path to healing, and it starts with gratitude.

A gratitude journal is more than just a tool; it's a lifeline. It's a place to express your feelings, honor your loved one's memory, and discover the beauty that still exists in your world. By focusing on the positive, you can begin to cultivate a sense of peace and resilience.

Here's how a gratitude journal can help you heal:

* Shifting Your Focus: Grief can consume your thoughts, leaving little room for anything else. A gratitude journal encourages you to shift your focus towards the good things in your life, even if they seem small.

* Finding Joy: Amidst the sorrow, there are moments of joy, peace, or beauty. A gratitude journal helps you identify and appreciate these moments, reminding you that life is still worth living.

* Building Resilience: Cultivating gratitude can strengthen your resilience and ability to cope with challenges. By focusing on the positive, you're building a foundation for emotional well-being.

* Honoring Your Loved One: A gratitude journal can be a way to honor your child's memory. You can express gratitude for the time you had together, the lessons they taught you, and the impact they continue to have on your life.

Creating a gratitude journal is a personal journey. There's no right or wrong way to do it. You can start by simply writing down one thing you're grateful for each day. As you become more comfortable with the practice, you can expand your entries to include more details and emotions.

Take a moment to breathe, count the many blessings that surround you, and find just one thing you're excited for, whether it's a hobby you can engage in today, a trip you're taking, or a loved one you're about to see. Get present and stay in that presence for as long as possible. It will all work out. Release the attachment to how and just feel the feelings you'll have when you get to your destination. Trust the process. Trust yourself. šŸ¦ā€šŸ”„

The Three Keys to Make Your Success Inevitable

As someone who has been a hair puller and skin picker since the age of twelve, I know how hard it may seem to stop. I know how easy it is to fall into the helplessness these disorders bring into our lives. I also know the toll it can take on your mind and emotions when you fail and feel that you can’t stop. But can’t is a dirty word; it is a choice you make. Saying you can’t gives this disorder full control of your life and actions. But YOU are the captain of this ship, not your disorder. You are able to figure anything out. To do this, first believe you can.

If you keep these following three keys in mind when you work towards stopping your picking and pulling, you will find success. It will take time, commitment and a lot of action. With that being said, here are the three keys to making your success inevitable.

Key One: You need to be fully committed to stopping.

In order to stop picking and pulling, you must be completely and utterly committed to doing the required work to do so. You have to give 100% of yourself to attain this goal or else it won’t work out. Anything less than 100% is not good enough and you’ll fall into the gap of failure in which you’ll be stuck. It’s that simple. If you do fail, get up and try again. Don’t take the failure personally. You are trying different things and they won’t always stick right away, but if you’re giving it your all, you will succeed. Just keep taking action and moving forward and you’ll get to your destination in perfect timing.

Key Two: Take committed, consistent, imperfect action every day to stop. If you are not in action, you are not committed.

When you take action, it doesn’t have to be perfect. It needs to be committed, consistent and imperfect, because you are a human navigating a human experience of a disorder that is temporarily paralyzing you. But if you take steps daily to move out of it, you will succeed in perfect timing. No one is going to expect perfection from you. That’s your own expectation and it’s not realistic. Even taking small actions is better than nothing, so focus on doing, doing, doing whenever you get the chance. It all adds up at the end.

Key Three: Burn all bridges that can lead you backward. You are committed to stopping; therefore, there is no going back.

I’d never heard of the phrase, ā€œBurn the boats!ā€ Have you? If you haven’t, it basically means to burn all paths backward in order to move forward. Remove any possible avenue that involves not stopping, as they will never lead you to your goal. Once you start working towards stopping your picking or pulling, there is NO going back. If you truly want to stop, you must fully commit yourself to doing it. You simply don’t allow yourself to go back. If you fail, you start again and move forward, no matter what your mind tells you. You refuse to take the failure personally and you use it to move you in a different direction for your goal. Your mind is always going to tell you to do the opposite of whatever action is actually going to propel you forward.

Remember, lovely souls: It doesn’t matter how you start. What matters is how you finish. Just get started by taking daily action that is consistent, committed and imperfect and don’t look back, not even for a second. You may have picking and pulling deeply engraved as a habit now, but you can reverse it and stop. I picked and pulled for nearly thirty years, but with full commitment to doing the work to stop, I’ve climbed my way out of that hole. If you’re ready to stop picking and pulling but need some guidance, I’m ready to stand up and guide you. You have to be willing to be fully committed to doing the work. Reach out and we’ll discover ways to move forward! Let’s do this!

The knowledge I’m grateful for is that my place in this world, despite how many people are also alive on this planet, is as important and necessary and irreplaceable as it would be if I didn’t have the experiences and emotions I have. That’s true for any one of us. For the longest time I felt like the odd bird out in nearly every social situation I was in, in romantic relationships and platonic relationships alike. That felt true as far back as my early elementary school years. As I got older, a lot of people seemed to have no idea about what I was going through and couldn’t really give me any words of encouragement. There were only a few who actually stuck around as I was up to my ears in turmoil and heartache. For a while I went into radio static mode, barely talking about anything beneath the surface and moving through life as smoothly as possible. Only recently have I been able to emerge from that mode as I step into my power to pursue my coaching business. I’ve expressed over and over that I was an open book but I wasn’t living as such. I’ve come to realize that sharing my message means embodying the person who is brave enough, strong enough and determined enough to live boldly, with my emotions and experiences out in the open. I cannot allow myself to feel ashamed or embarrassed about what I’ve been through, because it is in these low moments that I’ve grown into the woman you see and experience today. I’m extremely proud of her and I’m so thankful to be her.

Oh, life is heating up all around me in Ohio today, with storms threatening to take the sunshine and the sunshine threatening to give us some Floridian-esque tans. I'm Floridian so I'm okay with the tan! Maybe I should sit outside and catch some rays! I think today is the perfect day to reflect on these questions about your success, belief in yourself and believing in your actions. Lovely soul, you have so much unbelievable power inside of you, and it is waiting to come to life with your belief! The universe is always responding to your belief, so act in accordance and love for yourself. Amazing things will happen if you just BELIEVE!

My best skill would have to be the ability to teach others, young or old, the things that correlate most closely with my life experiences and what I find most important. I have been teaching off and on for almost twenty years, starting during my senior year in high school at the age of eighteen. I will be forty one this year. It’s so hard to believe that much time has passed and it’s even harder to imagine all the roller coaster rides I’ve been on since then. But what makes my journey so beautiful is knowing that the whole time, as I was going up one way and down another, over and over again, sometimes hopelessly, I was following my dream of teaching. Even if it wasn’t in the right age group or in the right classroom or in the right manner, I still taught, I still showed up and I still put one foot in front of the other no matter how I felt. Now I’m slowly inching my way to teaching to a new gallery of people, of people who will love and accept and receive my message as they polish up their own.

Your turn, lovely souls! Share with me your best skill!

My best personal attribute is warm heartedness. I’ve actually heard people describe me as such, and I feel that is why I get such a warm reaction from some people, including complete strangers. But I also feel that is why I get such a warm reaction from kids, whether I just met them or not. I’ve watched kids go from frowning or crying to smile because I looked at them with a smile or said something kind. I’ve seen kids who have never laid eyes on me point at me and grin from ear to ear. I’m not sure what I look like in the eyes of others, but I hope I am a ray of sunshine and inspiration. I hope my warm heartedness can be felt through computer and phone screens and the posts that I write. I hope that knowing what’s on my heart helps to hear yours.

Something positive I didn’t have a year ago is my coaching business. It may be in its very beginnings, but it wasn’t a thought a year ago. In fact, I was about to start a new job and turn forty years old. I was basically just coasting through life and not looking outside to the bigger picture. I’ve wanted to work for myself for a pretty long time. I’ve actually spent an embarrassingly long time thinking about it and attempting to make it happen, but I didn’t deeply realize that tapping into my passion of helping people with the same problems I struggled with would be the key to making these dreams as a child come true. In talking to others about this new direction with others, I feel a little weird because I was a teacher before this. I’m still a teacher now but in a new direction. Hopefully it will roll off my tongue elegantly some time soon.

A passion of mine that gives me purpose is helping others who have dealt with the same or similar mental adversities as I’ve had to face. Because of the bullying I endured throughout my childhood, I ended up developing a hair pulling disorder called trichotillomania, combined with skin picking or dermatillomania. That led to anxiety and depression (or unexpressed sadness, fear and anger from being bullied). When the hair pulling and skin picking became evident to my parents, I started getting into big trouble with my parents. I think I’ve blocked out some parts, as my memories of those days are hazy now. I’m actually okay with that. However, I’ll probably never forget the words they spoke to me of those times, and I know there are countless people in the world who have heard the same kind of language being hurled at us without us truly understanding the meaning but being utterly shattered to hear them. I’ll also never forget how all these people in my life made me feel. I know I’m not alone on that. Now that I’m an adult, I have the power to heal my own hurt while helping others heal theirs as well. This excites me when I wake up in the morning, as I’m ready to start another day of adventures and healing. I’m at the beginning of this journey with helping others, so it will be a learning curve. But I know that following this passion will give me so much purpose, freeing myself to share my message and show others the way to joy and gratitude.

Now it's your turn! What is a passion of yours that gives you a sense of purpose?

If you were to ask me who I’m grateful for, aside from the usual suspects (my daughter and my fiance), my answer would be the bullies who helped to shape me into the person I am today. I know that may sound like a weird answer. Why would I be thankful for the people who tormented me and said such horrible things that I still remember them to this day? It’s because those experiences built the resiliency, determination and strength you see in me today, though it has taken me a while to step into it with grace. However, they also helped me see myself beyond that sad, fearful little girl who just couldn’t understand why people would treat her that way. As an adult, I still don’t understand it all, especially since my own parents have treated me just as unkindly as my bullies and I’ve lost my daughter because of this unkindness. I think having to fight so hard seemingly on my own has continued to add to my resiliency and determination to succeed. As I step further into my power, I realize that giving up on any level is just not an option. My message is far too important to put out my light and rip away any chance of sharing it with others who need it. Somewhere, someone is dreaming of me, of the message and power I hold within me, and so I must keep going. I must focus on the greater picture of my purpose. Sharing this message with others and helping them to share theirs is my purpose.

Your turn! Whom are you most grateful for and why?
