If you’re preparing for Colorado snow, don’t forget about your hands! After every major snowstorm, I meet sad patients full of regret.

That’s because I’m a hand surgeon — and I meet them in the emergency room.

After they instinctively used their fingers to try to unclog their jammed snowblower 😔.

Tomorrow is supposed to be a heavy, wet snow. The exact kind that clogs your machine.

Turn it off. Use a stick. Anything but your hands.

Did you know some fractures can be fixed through an incision small enough to be closed with 1 suture?

Some days it’s just nice to make bones straight.

This patient came to me with a small finger that was deformed and rotated from their metacarpal neck fracture (aka ‘boxer’s fracture).

The intramedullary screw technique I used here is minimally-invasive.

And the best part?

No cast or splint is needed. The patient is already moving their hand and recovering dexterity.

I've seen too many suffer to say confidently:

Failing to pay attention to your elbow position during work is a huge mistake.

There's so much noise out there about wrist positions, but if you work with your elbows at 90° all day, it's a recipe for developing ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow.

Make these changes to avoid an unwelcome surprise:

• Invest in a workstation that allows your elbows to be at least slightly straighter than 90°
• Take frequent breaks and let those arms hang down (takes pressure off the ulnar nerve when you do)
• Don't rest your arms on a desk with pressure directly on the elbow
