When anxiety goes up ⬆️ , executive functioning goes down ⬇️

This means things like focus, planning, memory, and emotional regulation become harder- not because someone isn’t trying, but because their brain is doing what its wired to do under stress- protect and survive.

This is especially true for kids. What might look like “laziness” or “disrespect” is often a nervous system under stress.

Let’s meet anxiety with compassion, not criticism- and support kids (and ourselves) by creating calm, predictable environments where the brain can feel safe enough to function.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the strength it takes to grow emotionally—especially the courage to say, “I was wrong.” When caregivers model accountability, they teach children that mistakes aren’t failures—they’re opportunities to learn, repair, and connect. Letting go of the need to be right paves the way for deeper relationships, emotional resilience, and generational healing. 💛

Chores Build Confidence — Not Just Clean Rooms

Giving children age-appropriate chores isn’t just about helping around the house — it’s about helping them grow.

Chores provide structure, responsibility, and a sense of contribution. More importantly, they build competence, which leads to confidence.

✔️ Start small and build up
✔️ Acknowledge effort, not perfection
✔️ Reinforce: “You’re capable and trusted”

Kids thrive when they feel they matter and can make a difference.

Emotional regulation is not an innate ability—it is a learned skill.

Just like learning to read or ride a bike, children need time, support, and consistent guidance to develop the ability to manage their emotions. This process is not about enforcing compliance; it is about helping children build the capacity to pause, reflect, and respond rather than react.

When a child struggles with emotional regulation, it is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign that they are still learning. With patience, modeling, and consistent support, they can develop the tools they need to navigate their emotions effectively.

POWERS Skill: STEPS + Meet Flopsy

When faced with a big challenge, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed or stuck. The STEPS skill from the POWERS program helps break down tasks into small, manageable actions, making it easier to move forward with confidence.

Flopsy, a determined dog learning to play tennis, is the perfect example of how taking things step by step leads to success.

Using STEPS means asking yourself:

◾What is the very first action I can take?
◾Can I break this goal into even smaller steps?
◾How can I stay focused on progress rather than perfection?

Just like Flopsy, anyone can build resilience and confidence by taking things one step at a time. Learn more about POWERS skills at www.powersprogram.com.
