Rush M Cox,Sr
Rush Morgan Cox Sr. returned to his heavenly home May 1, 2026. He passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Washington, DC on June 15, 1938, to Swanson Allen and Zena Rosen Cox. His childhood was spent mostly in Capitol Heights, Maryland. On June 15, 1957, he married his great love, Barbara Ann Thompson. Their early married life was spent in Clinton, Maryland. Rush and Barbara moved to Kent Island, Maryland in 1976. They moved to Florida in 1999 to escape the cold winters and enjoy the company of many friends. Barbara passed away on August 23, 2019.
Rush was a loving, devoted husband, caring father, and supportive grandfather. He is survived by his son, Rush (Buddy) Cox Jr., daughter-in-law, Mary, and daughter, Cathy Cox Edwards. Cathy moved to Florida in 2003. Cathy spent many years lovingly caring for her parents. He is also survived by grandchildren, David Cox (DeNeah), Laura Butler (Bryon), Christopher Cox (Heather), Justin Edwards, Ben Edwards, Alayna Edwards, and 10 great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his sisters, Louise Ash and Katherine Cornwell (Ricky) and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Rush was always a hard worker. He started working early in life on a paper route and working in his father's gas station. After high school he worked as a lineman for C&P Phone Company. His career continued in the phone company, and he retired from Verizon management after 31 years' service. He continued to work in retirement by starting an excavating company. In his later years, his passion was restoring old cars. He spent many hours in his garage, often enjoying the company of his fellow mechanics. He was always helpful and considerate of others, often putting their needs before his own. He retained membership with the Centreville, MD Masonic Lodge #180 for over 45 years.
He will be profoundly missed. His extensive knowledge and expertise are irreplaceable, and our loss will be felt continually. Please pray for the beautiful reunion of Rush and Barbara to share in the joy of eternal brightness, free from the pains of this world.
Rush's life celebration and interment will be private. The grieving family appreciates the prayers and kind expressions of sympathy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Children's Hospital.
