While we are saddened to hear the news of the diagnosis for Bruce, we are using this as an educational moment.

Aphasia is a condition that affects your ability to communicate. It can affect your speech, as well as the way you write and understand both spoken and written language.

Aphasia typically occurs suddenly after a stroke or a head injury. But it can also come on gradually from a slow-growing brain tumor or a disease that causes progressive, permanent damage (degenerative). The severity of aphasia depends on a number of conditions, including the cause and the extent of the brain damage.

Once the cause has been addressed, the main treatment for aphasia is speech and language therapy. The person with aphasia relearns and practices language skills and learns to use other ways to communicate. Family members often participate in the process, helping the person communicate.

We, at TOTR, work with patients with Aphasia and know that proper treatment is the key to improvement with this diagnosis.

You’ve probably seen this post at some point in the past few days. If you haven’t heard, the CDC changed their milestones for speech and language and, as SLPs and parents, we are disappointed. We worry that these new milestones will increase the length of time it may take for a child to be identified with a language delay and to access the appropriate services that will help push the child to be ready to enter school.

"Many people wait years or even decades to seek help for their hearing loss, as illustrated in the new televised public service announcement, Act Now on Hearing. By taking action, a person can improve their overall health, mental health, personal relationships, and quality of life. Act Now on Hearing is a public service announcement campaign of the National Association for Hearing and Speech Action (NAHSA), the consumer affiliate of ASHA. 1 year ago I was absolutely panicking wondering how we could survive a shut down in a field where we are so hands on. We shifted and adapted and survived. I couldn't have done this without the support and grace of our whole team at TOTR and will forever be grateful to those who demonstrated true leadership during this tough time.
