Scientists have discovered that a gum-disease bacteria called Porphyromonas gingivalis may play a hidden role in Alzheimer’s disease.

This microscopic organism, often found in bleeding or inflamed gums, doesn’t just stay in the mouth. Research shows it can enter the bloodstream, travel to the brain, and release toxic enzymes known as “gingipains.” These enzymes can damage brain cells, spark chronic inflammation, and even accelerate the buildup of amyloid plaques—sticky protein clusters that are strongly linked to memory loss and cognitive decline.

In animal studies, infection with P. gingivalis led to brain changes strikingly similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s patients. Even more concerning, human studies have detected traces of these bacterial toxins in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s.

While brushing and flossing may seem like small daily habits, the latest evidence suggests they could also be one of the simplest ways to reduce risks that reach far beyond the mouth—possibly protecting the brain itself.

The IMPORTANCE of Fluoride in water💧 🦷💧🦷💧🦷💧🦷💧🦷💧🦷💧🦷

A recent study highlights serious risks to children’s oral health if fluoride is removed from U.S. public water systems.

Researchers from Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital analyzed national health data to estimate the long-term impact of ending water fluoridation—a proven public health measure used since 1945.

The simulation predicts that discontinuing fluoridation could lead to 25.4 million additional cases of tooth decay over five years, with low-income children being most affected. The associated treatment costs could increase by nearly $10 billion.

While concerns about high levels of fluoride exposure still exist, the study confirms that fluoride concentrations in U.S. tap water remain well below harmful levels. Real-life examples from cities like Calgary, Windsor, and Juneau show a clear rise in tooth decay after fluoridation was stopped.

The researchers emphasize that although it is important to monitor fluoride exposure, the scientific evidence strongly supports fluoridation as a key strategy in preventing dental disease, especially in underserved populations.
