✨Serving Up Care and Compassion: Michael Matthews Marks 29 Years of Hospitality Excellence

When Michael Matthews joined HCA Florida Englewood Hospital nearly three decades ago, his goal was simple: provide steady hours for his young family. What he found was a career filled with purpose and pride.

“My proudest moment was when our team finished first in the division for patient satisfaction,” Michael said. “That recognition meant everything because it reflected the dedication of our entire team.”

When asked about one of his most significant memories, he pointed to the resilience demonstrated by our colleagues in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. “While catastrophic in so many ways, our culture at Englewood HCA was the shining light during the darkest hours,” he recalled.

Over the years, Michael has seen the hospital grow and evolve. “We’ve added so many services for our community,” he said. “But the culture remains the heartbeat of Englewood HCA.”

What keeps him here after 29 years? “I never wanted my success to get in the way of my happiness,” he said. “True strength always lies in the dedication of your team members.”
Outside of work, Michael loves to write and has a deep fascination with history. His advice for newcomers? “The best thing about being a caregiver is learning how to care.”

Michael reflected on the significance of celebrating our 40th Anniversary as a hospital: “It means there is still a place in this world for genuine care. Every day I walk through that door, it must be my best day, because it might be one of our patients’ worst days.”

Thank you, Michael, for nearly three decades of service and for reminding us that hospitality is more than a job, it’s a calling.

Heart Surgery Deepens Nurse’s Compassion: Frank Brown, RN, Named Q3 DAISY Award Honoree

Frank Brown, RN, has been named HCA Florida Englewood Hospital’s DAISY Award winner for the third quarter, an honor recognizing nurses who deliver extraordinary clinical care and compassion.

Frank’s dedication to his patients is remarkable. His firsthand experience as a patient has deepened his empathy and strengthened his connection with those he serves.

One patient shared, “You made me feel so special and comforted, especially when you went out of your way to get me dinner after the cafeteria had closed. You are truly an incredible person and the best nurse I have ever met. Thank you for helping me and being so kind, especially considering it was your first day back from heart surgery.”

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes to honor the extraordinary care he received. Honorees receive a certificate, a DAISY pin, a hand-carved “Healer’s Touch” sculpture, and cinnamon rolls to share with their team. Congratulations, Frank!

Hope starts with a home.🏡

🔨Today, nurses and leaders from HCA Florida Englewood Hospital and HCA Florida Wellen Park Emergency traded scrubs for hammers during Habitat for Humanity South Sarasota County’s Women Build Week.

💪🏽Thirteen women contributed more than 58 hours to hang drywall and write heartfelt messages on the walls for the future homeowners. This home will be a safe space for a family to thrive, a yard for children to play and a foundation for new beginnings.

✨We’re proud to sponsor Habitat for Humanity and share their belief that stable housing builds stronger, healthier communities. Together, we extend our mission to care for and improve human life beyond hospital walls.

"We’ve partnered with Habitat for Humanity for years because we believe health begins at home. Seeing our colleagues and community members work side by side to make a dream of homeownership a reality was truly inspiring," said Kelly Lindsay, CEO, HCA Florida Englewood Hospital.

🥫Fighting Hunger. Feeding Hope. We Show Up!

HCA Florida Englewood Hospital colleagues joined forces to fight food insecurity through the Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows initiative, part of the HCA Healthcare Food and Nutrition Drive.

Thanks to their generosity, we collected three pickup trucks of donations, more than 2,240 pounds of food, providing over 3,360 nutritious meals for those in need.

Our team packed boxes to support local families, starting with confidential requests from hospital colleagues. Community partners stepped up to deliver food to St. David's Jubilee Center of Englewood Florida ahead of Thanksgiving.

A big thank-you to hospital board members Doug Izzo and Dave Wampler, Community Advisory Council members Brian Faro, Dr. Todd Chace and Joe Cataldo, and fellow Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary members for making this possible.

According to the USDA, 12.8% of U.S. households were food insecure in 2022, up from 10.2% in 2021. Poor nutrition can lead to obesity, a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and many cancers.

This initiative reflects our mission and purpose: the care and improvement of human life. We’re grateful for our partnership organizations that ensure community needs are met.

Heart symptoms never happen at a good time, but getting the right answers can make all the difference.

While EKGs, ultrasounds, and stress tests are helpful first steps, they often give a broad look at your heart. When you need more clarity, precision cardiac imaging takes things further with detailed CT scans and MRIs that reveal what’s really going on.

These advanced images help your cardiologist pinpoint the exact issue — from arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies to coronary artery or valvular disease — so your treatment plan is tailored to you.

If you’re experiencing chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath, or an irregular heartbeat, don’t wait. Talking with a cardiologist is the best first step. They’ll decide whether precision imaging is needed based on your symptoms and risk factors.

Seizures can be frightening, but understanding them helps you respond safely. A seizure is caused by sudden electrical activity in the brain and can look like shaking, staring, confusion or a brief loss of awareness.

If someone has a seizure, stay calm, move harmful objects away, cushion their head and roll them onto their side if needed. Don’t put anything in their mouth or try to hold them down. Call 911 if it lasts longer than five minutes, it’s their first seizure, they’re injured or having trouble breathing.

If you or a loved one recently experienced a seizure, follow up with a neurologist to understand the cause and next steps. For questions, call our Consult-A-Nurse® line at (844) 70-NURSE (844-706-8773) for free, 24/7 support.

is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America, according to the American Lung Association. And for many people, there are no symptoms until later stages of the disease. That’s why lung cancer screening is so important. Screening can detect cancer early, when it’s most treatable. It’s performed through a low-dose computerized tomography (CT) scan – an X-ray of your lungs that could lead to life-saving care.

Not sure if you should get screened? Follow these guidelines from HCA Healthcare’s Sarah Cannon Cancer Network. If you’re between age 50 and 80 and you meet at least one of the criteria shown here, you’re eligible for a low-dose CT scan. If you have Medicare, you must be 50 to 77 to be eligible.
