It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we had to say goodbye to our beloved clinic cat, Leo, yesterday. He made his journey across the rainbow bridge surrounded by love. He was a fixture and source of laughter, and sometimes consternation, for 17 years. He came to us in 2004 as a ~four-month-old kitten after Dr. Jasek (Animal Healing Arts) put out the call for an orange tabby clinic cat. He was indeed a typical male orange tabby. He and trouble went together like peanut butter & jelly. He was always there to greet clients and sometimes be inappropriately straight forward. Insisting on butt rubs, cheek scratches and treats if you had ‘em. We often wonder how many clients were able to take advantage of our “Leo Special”. Bags of food that would have tell tale holes ripped in them for a 10% discount, because we were too distracted and not quick enough to stop him from making minced meat of our inventory. He was love and life personified. Unbothered and unfettered. Even a near death experience at the jaws of a Rottweiler never instilled a lifelong fear of dogs in him. Dare I say, he was almost reckless in his oblivious manner of being near a dog that would have loved nothing more than use him as a chew toy. That was our Leo in a nutshell. If more humans were like Leo this would be a better world for it. We will miss him greatly. If you have a Leo story to share, please let us know because we love to hear Leo stories.

Halloween is just a few days away. Here are some tips to help keep your pet's safe.

7 Things You Can Do to Make Halloween Safer for Your Pet

1. Don't feed your pets Halloween candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies and gum);

2. Make sure your pet is properly identified (microchip, collar and ID tag) in case s/he escapes through the open door while you're distracted with trick-or-treaters;

3 Keep lit candles and jack-o-lanterns out of reach of pets;

4. If you plan to put a costume on your pet, make sure it fits properly and is comfortable, doesn't have any pieces that can easily be chewed off, and doesn't interfere with your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, opening its mouth, or moving. Take time to get your pet accustomed to the costume before Halloween, and never leave your pet unsupervised while he/she is wearing a costume;

5. Keep glow sticks and glow jewelry away from your pets. Although the liquid in these products isn't likely toxic, it tastes really bad and makes pets salivate excessively and act strangely;

6. If your pet is wary of strangers or has a tendency to bite, put him/her in another room during trick-or-treating hours or provide him/her with a safe hiding place;

7. Keep your pet inside.
