It’s been a hot minute since I’ve introduced myself, and there are quite a few new faces here… so hi. I’m Jamie.

I’ve been working in pediatrics since 1998 and became a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in 2018. Somewhere along the way I developed a particular interest in mental health, newborn weirdness, and helping parents figure out what’s actually normal vs. what the internet convinced them is a crisis.

A few things about how I practice:

• I believe in explaining the “why.”
• I believe parents should actually be part of the decision-making process about their kids. Wild concept, I know.
• I spend a lot of time helping families sort out what’s normal kid behavior and what’s a real medical issue.
• I have a soft spot for new parents trying to survive the first year.
• And mental health in kids is not optional or secondary—it matters just as much as physical health.

You’ll see a mix here of pediatric education, reassurance for stressed parents, Tiny Human Tuesday posts (I need to get back to those), and the occasional glimpse of whatever I’m baking in my kitchen on my days off.

If you’re new here—welcome.
If you’ve been here a while—thanks for sticking around.

And remember: Google is loud, but it doesn’t know your kid.

Not actually off today—these started on Sunday, when I was off.
Long fridge ferment. Several days. Zero panic.
Baked on Thursday… and they still turned out 🔥.

This is exactly why I spend my off days in the kitchen—meal prepping, slow cooking, and setting Future Me up for success.
Tiny humans get my full brain during the week.
My fridge gets the planning.

Also: long fermentation = better flavor. Science.

Mady and I couldn’t wait to cut into these….so, yes, there were 12. I’m not a sociopath. 🤪

Coming to see sick kids for a few hours in the office this morning if you need to get your loved one in!

If you’ve been seeing me since I moved, you may know I don’t usually work Tuesdays, but with all the sickness, thought I’d try to keep a few more kids out of the urgent care/ER this morning! As of right now I still have openings. Will only be working until noon, so come see me!

On my days off, if you’re looking for me…
I’m probably in the kitchen. 🍞

Kneading dough, baking bread, testing something new, meal prepping for the week, making a mess, and pretending it’s “relaxing” while absolutely refusing to follow a recipe exactly as written.

It’s where my brain slows down, my hands stay busy, and I get to create something start-to-finish that doesn’t involve charting, labs, or explaining why Google is not a medical degree.

Some people decompress with yoga.
I bake sourdough, make bagels, and prep meals like it’s a competitive sport.

Balance, right? 🥖✨

Post-Christmas Check-In 🎄✨

The decorations are still up, the fridge is full of leftovers no one actually wants anymore, and everyone is a little tired… but it was good.

Good memories. Good food. A little chaos. A lot of laughter. And just enough quiet moments to make it all feel worth it.

Now we rest, reset, and ease back into real life — slowly, with coffee (or Diet Coke), and absolutely zero urgency to put the tree away.

Hope your Christmas was exactly what it needed to be. ❤️

Gingerbread House Showdown 2025 🍬🏠

What started as “let’s make gingerbread houses for fun” turned into a full-blown family competition faster than you can say “hand me the icing bag.”
And before anyone gets ideas: this is an internal vote only. No outside judging. Positive vibes only. No democracy here. 😂

Here are the contenders:

🏠 House 1: The giant red bow says, “I came to win and I don’t care who knows it.”
🏠 House 2: Cozy, glowing, suspiciously perfect. This house probably has a 401k.
🏠 House 3: The tidy, wreath-wearing overachiever. Definitely did extra credit.
🏠 House 4: The quieter bow sibling — trying, adorable, and absolutely sick of House 1’s attitude.
🏠 House 5: Pink icing explosion. Barbie’s ski chalet. Serving maximalist sugar-fairy realness.

We’ll handle the voting privately — like the civilized, competitive, icing-covered humans we are.
May the best house win… and may the losers stop pouting before New Year’s. 😂🎄🍬

One of my tiny patients (with full parent permission, obviously) is letting me share a moment that just about knocked the wind out of me: a video of him walking and saying my name!!!!

When I first met him at 9 months old, he’d just had a benign brain tumor removed. He had lost nearly all his milestones. We navigated surgeries, setbacks, and the kind of uncertainty that keeps you up at night — both as a provider and as a human being who cares…..a lot.

And now?
This kid is out here taking steps, talking, and thriving like he’s got something to prove. (Spoiler: he does.)

He’s one of the biggest reminders of why I do what I do, why I fight for these kiddos, why I educate parents until they’re sick of hearing my voice, and why I show up every day even when the job is… a lot.

Watching him come this far has been an absolute privilege.
And honestly? I’m just honored to be part of his comeback story. 💙

TINY HUMAN TUESDAY: My Favorite Newborn Products

You don’t need to buy everything the internet insists your baby “needs.”
(If you did, you’d need a storage unit and a line of credit.)

Here are the actually useful things I recommend for keeping tiny humans clean, comfy, and breathing through their noses like pros:

🧴 For skin that doesn’t hate you:
• CeraVe Baby Wash
• CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Cream
• Cetaphil Baby Wash
• Eucerin Baby Eczema Relief Cream
• Baby Aquaphor (because dry skin waits for no one)

🍑 For diaper duty:
• Calmoseptine (the diaper rash MVP)
• Butt Paste (backup MVP)
• WaterWipes (because sometimes you just need simplicity and fewer chemicals)

🌞 For supplements and tummy peace:
• D Drops for Infants
• Mommy’s Bliss Vitamin D + Probiotic Drops
• Simethicone Drops (aka “tiny gas miracle”)

🌿 For sniffles and coughs:
• Zarbee’s Cough & Congestion
• Hyland’s Cough & Congestion
• Saline Nasal Drops
• Nasal Aspirator (gross but necessary)
• Boogie Wipes

🍓 For teething without tears:
• Mesh Baby Teether (freeze fruit or breastmilk—thank me later)

✨ Bonus tip:
Skip the Pinterest nursery gadgets. A calm baby with clean skin, clear airways, and happy guts will sleep better than any sound machine can promise.

Good morning!!
For families with infants using By Heart formula, please check the lots numbers against this recall. This does affect Texas.

The FDA is warning against using certain ByHeart formula lots as they investigate over a dozen botulism cases across 10 states.

TINY HUMAN TUESDAY…..errrrr FRIDAY: Newborn Rashes

You finally get baby home, you’re barely sleeping, and suddenly — what in the name of baby acne is THAT on their face?!

Relax. Most newborn rashes are completely normal and not a sign of the apocalypse (or a dairy allergy).
Here are a few common culprits:

👶 Erythema Toxicum:
The name sounds like a chemical spill, but it’s just baby’s skin adjusting to the outside world. Red blotches with white/yellow centers — harmless, temporary, and needs zero treatment.

✨ Baby Acne:
Thanks, hormones. Appears around 2–4 weeks, looks just like teen acne, and disappears without intervention (no need for your skincare serum, promise).

🌸 Milia:
Tiny white bumps on the nose or cheeks — basically baby pores learning how to human.

🔥 Heat Rash:
Too many layers, not enough airflow. Cool them down and it’ll fade fast.

💡 When to actually call your pediatrician:
If the rash is spreading quickly, blistering, oozing, or your baby has a mild fever, seems uncomfortable, or isn’t feeding well. Those are good reasons to skip Dr. Google and reach out.

🚨 When to bypass your pediatrician and head straight to the ER:
• Any fever in a baby under 2 months old (100.4°F / 38°C or higher)
• Rash appears suddenly with swelling of lips, eyes, or tongue
• The baby is lethargic, not waking to feed, or feels unusually cold or hot
• There’s purple or bruise-like spotting that doesn’t blanch when pressed
• Any rash accompanied by trouble breathing or a weak cry
• Or, let’s be honest — if your gut says “this feels wrong,” trust it.

Otherwise? Take a breath. Take a photo. And resist the urge to Google “newborn rash pictures” unless you enjoy trauma.

Hello everyone! Lots of people know me already but I’m a pediatric nurse practitioner in Ennis and wanted to let those who do know that I’ve moved to Puckett Family Medicine Clinic in the professional building at Ennis Regional. I know that the word has also been spreading through some of the local groups and lots of my sweet families have found me. And I’m so glad to have those familiar faces in the office!

For those looking for a pediatric provider, I’m accepting new patients and would love to have your kiddos at my office! Parents can also be seen here with one of our family nurse practitioners making it a convenient place for the whole family to be seen.

I have over 25 years in pediatrics and have a passion for kids. I am also certified as a Pediatric Mental Health Specialist drawing on my own childhood experiences to help guide others.
