The City of Enterprise Fire Department will begin its annual fire hydrant residual testing soon, weather permitting. This important testing ensures that fire hydrants are operating properly and that the water system can provide adequate volume to help protect homes and businesses.
Approximately 280 hydrants across the city will be tested. Fire crews expect to test 10 to 15 hydrants per day, and the testing could take up to six weeks to complete. Testing is conducted by shift, with each shift continuing where the previous one left off to maintain efficiency and safety.
“The annual hydrant testing is an important part of our training and preparedness,” said Fire Chief Christopher Davis. “It allows our firefighters to make sure equipment is working properly while also giving them hands-on experience. This testing ensures each hydrant can deliver the proper water pressure if there is a fire. We are also very mindful of our residents and take steps to complete the testing efficiently, limiting any impact to homes and businesses.”
During testing, residents may notice temporary changes to their water service, including brief fluctuations in pressure or a temporary orange or rusty tint. These effects are temporary and occur as the normal sediment in the water system is distributed.
“The water remains safe for normal use, including drinking and bathing, and residents do not need to boil it,” Davis added. “If laundry or other water use becomes discolored during testing, we advise running cold water until it clears. Residents may also consider running water from an outside faucet to help flush the system. These steps should help minimize any inconvenience.”
Fire Department personnel take additional precautions to minimize impacts to surrounding properties. Crews monitor water runoff, remain aware of downhill flow, and work to avoid flooding yards, driveways, or nearby structures. The City of Enterprise Fire Department appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this necessary annual testing is completed.
