When a child doesn't have oportunity to express his grief 💔, there can be serious mental, psycological, or physical issues that last a life time 🧔. Children learn and process through play. Recreating the events surrounding a death is healing for the child and those who hear the story 😎.

Talking with your child about a difficult death—especially a su***de—can feel overwhelming. But honesty, in age-appropriate language, is essential.

Young children need small, clear explanations. Older kids and teens may ask more complex questions. Follow their lead. It’s okay to say “I don’t know” if you truly don’t have all the answers.

Saying something like, “Your mom died by su***de. That means she caused her own death,” might feel hard—but children often hear the word and need help understanding it.

If you haven’t known how to talk about it before, be gentle with yourself. You’re grieving too. What matters most now is creating a safe space for honest conversations to begin.

Children want to be recognized and have their pain and confusion acknowledged. To validate and support a grieving child that asks
difficult questions, we can respond in ways like this:
• “What you’re thinking (or feeling) is normal.”
• “You are OK.”
• “It’s natural (or normal) to feel that way.”

What we don’t want is to minimize their feelings by
saying things like this:
• “You shouldn’t feel like that.”
• “Don’t worry.”
• “That’s silly.”
You don't have to have all the answers. Just listen, and love them.

From the moment we hear their first cries, we want to protect our children from life’s sorrows. While we can't shield them entirely, we do our best—providing joy, keeping them safe, and reassuring them.

Yet, loss and tragedy are inevitable: a loved one’s death, a house fire, or the loss of a beloved pet. As we navigate our own grief, we must also guide our children through theirs.

We can’t control everything in life, but there are ways to help grieving children cope and heal.
