Mothers often deserve more adoration and appreciation than we can ever express, so we were grateful for the opportunity to celebrate them at our Assisted Living and Long-Term Care Mother’s Day Tea. It was a lovely time to share special memories, spend quality time together, and enjoy delicious treats.

Thank you to the Activities team, Nutritional Services department and all staff and volunteers who came together to make this celebration possible.

Meet Alexa (Lexi):

Lexi is someone who exemplifies what being a nurse is all about. “My favorite part about being a nurse is being fully present with my patients, where my skills, experience, intuition and humanity all come together to make my patients feel not only seen but also genuinely cared for,” she said. It is this motivation that drives her to deliver excellent care to patients during moments when they are often most vulnerable. “It is such an honor to be given the opportunity to provide that holistic care to patients, during those moments.”

When she’s not working, Lexi prioritizes rest and self‑care. “because you truly cannot pour from an empty cup,”. She recharges by spending quality time with her family and enjoying hobbies such as being outdoors, yoga, exercising, gardening, and baking.

For anyone interested in pursuing nursing, Lexi shares this thoughtful, thorough advice: “Going into nursing requires not only a compassionate heart and strong clinical knowledge, but longevity in this career also requires consistent growth, flexibility and strong emotional intelligence. Becoming a nurse means you will have an opportunity to positively impact hundreds of lives, and it is truly such a cool profession to be a part of! If you're at all curious about nursing, I encourage you to go talk to a nurse, ask about shadowing a nurse, speak with your local college about their nursing programs, or talk to currently enrolled nursing students. Get out there and ask all your questions! Having a strong desire to learn sets you up for a wonderful foundation into the nursing world. And a message for those of you that are currently in the thick of nursing school: you've got this!”

Lexi gives her all in everything she does, and her genuine heart shines through in the care she provides.

Thank you for sharing your story, Lexi, and we thank all nurses for their continued commitment to compassionate patient care.

Meet Gina:

Inspired by her mother, who was an LPN for many years, Gina followed her passion for caring for others and became an RN in the same year her mother did. “My mom was a warrior and my human hero,” Gina said.

Gina has a special place in her heart for the people in the Garden Oasis Assisted Living Department. “The relationships here at Garden Oasis are life changing. I love taking care of people, and I get personal satisfaction from meeting their needs,” she said. The appreciation is deeply reciprocated by both the residents and staff in Garden Oasis Assisted Living.

To aspiring nurses, Gina offers several words of advice. “Do It! I have never regretted becoming a nurse. Always remember your CNA’s! I have the utmost respect for mine and I could not do my job without them. In a job where you can become jaded, remember compassion.”

Gina demonstrates that compassion in every patient interaction. For example, she shares a moment from earlier in her career when a young man was emotional about being diagnosed with AIDS. “In a time when you didn’t touch someone with HIV/AIDS without gloves, I gave him a big hug as he was crying and told him that I was sorry and that it would be ok. 30 plus years later that man is still someone I hug every time I see him.”

Caring is at the core of who Gina is, and her cheerful presence makes a lasting impact.

Thank you for sharing your story, Gina, and we thank all nurses for their continued commitment to compassionate patient care.

Meet Marissa:

For Marissa, nursing represents an ideal balance of compassion and knowledge, a balance that she has proven to embrace wholeheartedly “We provide not just medical care, but comfort and reassurance, reminding me how important compassion is in nursing,” Marissa said.

Marissa derives joy in making people feel safe and cared for, naming her favorite part of being a nurse as “Being able to care for patients, support them through difficult moments, and contribute to their recovery is incredibly rewarding at the West Wing,” she shares.

Drawing from her own experience, Marissa encourages those pursuing a career in nursing. “My advice would be to go into nursing with both heart and mind. It’s a rewarding career, but it can also be challenging. Stay open to learning, ask questions, and build a strong support system - you don’t have to do it alone.”

She also emphasizes the importance of having a work-life balance, noting, “I maintain a work-life balance by setting clear boundaries between work and my personal life. When I’m off work, I focus on rest, spending time with family, and doing things that help me recharge so I can come back to work focused and present.”

Thank you for sharing your story, Marissa, and we thank all nurses for their continued commitment to compassionate patient care.

Meet Jamie:
“I've always had a strong sense of empathy and desire to help others,” Jamie said, explaining what led her into a nursing career. What Jamie values in such a demanding field speaks to the type of nurse she is. “Nursing gives me the opportunity to connect with people, support them through difficult times, and be a part of something bigger than myself.

It is clear that Jamie strives to make a positive difference, helping her excel as an RN in the Emergency Department, where she thrives in the dynamic environment. “My favorite part about being a nurse at Columbia Basin Hospital Family Medicine is the people both the patients and my team. Every day is different and knowing we're making a real difference together makes it all worth it.”

Understanding the gravity of the role she plays during challenging moments, Jamie is intentional in how she navigates them. “Even though we do everything we can, sometimes the outcome wasn’t what anyone hoped. Cases like that have taught me something I carry everyday: nursing isn’t just about saving lives - it’s about showing up fully for patients and families, even if we can’t fix everything.”

Jamie’s morals, skill, and strong sense of empathy make her a natural fit for nursing. We are grateful to have her on our team.

Happy National Nurses Week!

Nurses perform some of the most difficult and heartbreaking tasks in the medical field, often serving as the first point of contact for patients.

In 1974, the International Council of Nurses officially designated May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, as International Nurses Day to honor the contributions of nurses and highlight issues affecting the profession. In the U.S., efforts to recognize nurses evolved over time, culminating in a week-long National Nurses Week established in 1990, with May 6–12 set as the permanent dates beginning in 1994.

At Columbia Basin Hospital Family Medicine, we value each and every one of our nurses for their meaningful, hard work and dedication.

What can you do to join the celebration?

Personally, thank the nurses in your life.

Write a thoughtful note on a nurse’s card on the wall in the facility.

Like and share our nurse spotlight stories this week.
