Pittsfield – Megan Loraine Whetstine, 29, passed away on April 26, 2025, in Pittsfield, NH after a long battle with Type 1 Diabetes and Gastroparesis.
Born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 7, 1995, to Diana L. Gardner (nee Draper) and Craig S. Whetstine, Megan was raised in Lewiston, NY where she graduated from Lewiston Porter High School in 2013 and received her associate’s degree from NCCC in 2015. In 2019, Megan graduated Magna Cum Laude from New York State School of Ceramics at Alfred University with a BFA in Ceramic Art. She is survived by her parents; stepfather, Lee E. Gardner; sister, Courtney R. Whetstine (Christian R. Robles); grandfather, Lloyd R. Draper (late Ramona); and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and mentors. Megan leaves behind her constant companion rescue dog, Thursday, and her cuddly, hairless cat, Margot.
Megan was an eccentric, uniquely gifted artist and baker able to showcase her talent in her jobs as cake decorator at Tops Market in Lewiston and artisan bread baker at Power City Bakery in Niagara Falls. Upon college graduation, she continued her artistic endeavors as a ceramics apprentice and art curator with John and Andrea Gill in Alfred, NY. Megan then earned the opportunity to participate in the prestigious residency ceramic program at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts Workshop in Newcastle, ME. She also received a grant to apprentice with long time mentor, Bryan Hopkins, in Buffalo, NY. Since 2020, Megan was employed by Matthew and Rose Katz at Ceramic Materials Workshop in Epsom, NH as a digital video producer.
Megan’s artwork was heavily influenced by her ongoing health issues. She often used humor to diffuse the severity of her conditions. In her own words, her art was a way to “grapple with mortality, mental health, chronic illness and a useless organ, sugar intake and being a person.” She shared her artistic gifts through exhibitions in local and national galleries including Albright Knox Art Gallery, Dolce Valvo Art Center, New York State Museum, Lew-Port Alumni Art Exhibition, and Theorii Contemporary Art Space. Her artistic legacy lives on in the many homes that display her work with pride.
Megan has been described as one of a kind, compassionate, sarcastic, beautiful, perfectly imperfect, quick-witted, incredibly talented, creative, bold and brilliant. As her dad says, “Words can’t accurately describe her personality, you have to experience it.” She was kind, funny, and unapologetically real - someone who made others feel seen, heard, and loved. Her radiant warmth, irreverent humor, and unfiltered honesty made her a rare and unforgettable soul. She will be sorely missed.
A Celebration of Life for Megan is being planned for late June 2025. Update to follow.
