🧪The students are busy in the Immunology Lab learning how to make red blood cell suspensions and serial dilutions to determine antibody titers!

🩸In this lab, the students serially diluted type O plasma with saline through 10 tubes. Then, they created and added a 2% suspension of saline and type A red blood cells into each tube. After the RBCs and dilutions were briefly mixed, the tubes were spun in a serofuge. The students then learned how to resuspend the cell buttons and read for agglutination using a light source and optical mirror. This is a skill that will be reinforced in Blood Bank! 🅰️🅾️

🧪In Chemistry Lab the students performed Lipoprotein Electrophoresis. 🧪

Lipoprotein electrophoresis is a method used to separate, quantify, and classify lipoproteins.

The procedure from Helena Laboratories uses cellulose acetate electrophoresis. It is a fairly simple procedure and a great one to demonstrate to students how electrophoresis works during a one-day student lab session.

Samples are applied to the cellulose acetate plate. The plate is then electrophoresed in an alkaline tris-barbital buffer. Then the cellulose acetate plate is stained in a methanol solution of Fat Red 7B.

Separation of the bands can be visualized for a qualitative result or quantified using a densitometer. The HDL band is the fastest moving and migrates closest to the anode, while the LDL band is the slowest and most prominent, located near the cathode at the origin.
