🔬🧪We had a great time showing families what happens in the hospital laboratory!! 🧪🔬

Performing "urine" dipsticks was fun for the kids! However, parents, kids, and the Nittany Lion enjoyed peering into the microscopes to see what red and white blood cells look like!!!

A great event, and we met some students who are interested in medical laboratory science!

🦠The students started Bacteriology this month! They have been VERY busy!! 🦠

🧫Plating many, many organisms on several different types of media!! Not just blood agar plates but also chocolate agar (not really made from chocolate ☹️), colistin nalidixic acid agar, and MacConkey agar, to name a few.

💜🩷Gram staining all of the organisms to note the Gram reaction and morphology of each organism.

🏃‍♂️‍➡️🏃‍♀️‍➡️Running biochemical tests and using our Vitek2 Compact instrument to identify organisms.

👩‍🔬👨‍🔬It is an extremely busy time, but the students are making the most of it!

📆I am certain they are also counting down the days until CLINICAL ROTATIONS!!!!!

👀 Exciting news that will help support our new student lab space at Gannon University I-HACK building!

Gannon is deeply grateful to Senator Dave McCormick for securing $500,000 in federal funding to support the development of two biomedical laboratories on Gannon’s Erie campus.

This meaningful investment will advance cancer treatment while strengthening workforce development in the region’s healthcare sector.

After a bit of snow fell in Erie the students went on a field trip to Community Blood Bank!

👀Tanya ('21) showed the students everything in the technical area. The students were able to see the enormous centrifuges used to separate whole blood donor units, freezers for fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate, and the refrigerators that store the blood.

The students spend one week at CBB during rotations!
