The scalenes are involved in neck stability, side bending, rotation, and flexion. The brachial plexus passes through the anterior and middle scalenes to provide blood and nerve flow to the upper extremity. The scalenes are part of inhalation and have a relationship to other breathing muscles. They also surround the cervical ganglia of the sympathetic chain, and thus are involved in flight or fight. This blog highlights those relationships and more.
