“Hospice care, which has the same goals as palliative care — which is to improve quality of life, treat suffering and provide support — is for someone who has a serious illness that has a life expectancy of less than six months,” said Dr. Seth Carter, a Geriatric and Family Medicine physician at LECOM Health. “You can receive palliative care while receiving curative treatments, so cancer patients or patients with severe heart failure or COPD can still go to their doctors or the hospital, and continue receiving treatment. The palliative care physician or team is there to help reduce discomfort and improve quality of life. Whereas with hospice, the focus shifts from curative treatment to comfort only.”
