ADRENAL STRESS DISORDER by Dr Rick Schaffnit
“I don’t feel well. I have so many problems but my blood and other tests are ok. I don’t know what’s wrong.”The Adrenal Glands, “What do they have to do with your health anyway?”
The adrenals are endocrine glands located over each kidney. They have many important bodily functions. They are instrumental in managing stress in your body and it is possible for them to overwhelmed by it.
Adrenal stress disorder occurs when the adrenal glands become incapable of meeting the demands placed upon them. This condition is also known as functional hypoadrenia because it is not a disease as such.
Because the adrenal glands are responsible for so many functions , when they are not at peak performance the following symptoms may occur: fatique, dizziness, joint pain, allergies, digestive disturbances, asthma, palpitations, back pain, headaches, impotence, colitis, chest pains, moodiness, depression, anxiety, nervousness, mental sluggishness, shakiness …..and on.
This condition commonly develops as a result of three factors: (1) distress that we are exposed to in living our daily lives which places a greater demand on the adrenals than they are capable of handling thus depleteting their reserves; (2) poor dietary and eating habits; (3) structural dysfunction causes stress within the body.

Hans Selye, M.D. researched this condition in the 1920’s and 30’s providing our current understanding. He described the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) of the Adrenal Stress Disorder which consists of three stages.
1. The Alarm Reaction which is a call to arms by our body’s defense mechanism as provided by the adrenals in response to any stress: emotional, chemical or physical.
2. The Resistive Stage occurs when the stress that activated the Alarm Stage is prolonged. The adrenals actually grow in size to meet the demand of long term stress.
3. The Exhaustive Stage is the final stage during which the adrenals reserves become depleted resulting in more serious life threating conditions.
To better understand why there are so many symptoms caused by this condition, one has to look at the hormones produced by the adrenal glands.
â—Ź Glucocorticoids are hormones involved in sugar metabolism and are also anti-inflammatory.
â—Ź Mineralocorticoids are hormones that help regulate mineral balance.
â—Ź Corticoids or the s*x hormones estrogen and testosterone.
● Epinepherine sometimes known as adrenaline is involved in the so called “fight or flight” response to traumatic stresses.
There is not time in this article for me to go into depth with examples of how imbalances in these hormones relate to specific symptoms and conditions. However, you can easily match the hormone’s function with the related symptom.
The next logical question is: How is Adrenal Stress Disorder diagnosed? By taking a thorough history of the following symptoms:
○ Tired and fatiqued in the morning after a full night’s sleep.
â—‹ Crave salt or salty foods.
â—‹ Energy lows occur at mid-morning and/or mid-afternoon.
â—‹ Increased energy after 6 PM often feeling the best of the day.
â—‹ Caffeine is used as a stimulant to get going and stay going.
â—‹ Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar.
○ Decreased s*x drive “libdo”
Clinical Tests
1. Dialation of the pupils in your eyes to
light.
2. Failure of the Systolic blood pressure to
rise upon standing “Ragland’s Sign”
3. Short circuited, turned off or weak
Sartorious muscle.
Treatment consist of rebuilding the adrenal to restore optimum function.
• Stress Reduction.
• Dietary changes: reduce refined foods like
white sugar and flour.
• Withdrawl from stimulants such as
caffeine, ci******es, alcohol.
• Whole food nutritional supplementation-
determined by individual needs.
Final thoughts: the adrenal glands can not rebuild when they are constantly being over-stimulated. How long it will take to rebuild is always depedent upon the person’s commitment to do what is necessary.
