Why Talk Therapy?

One of the coolest things about therapy is that it can bring about change at the level of the brain. We think of medication as changing the depressed brain, but there’s very compelling evidence that Talk Therapy does the same. With brain imaging methods, psychotherapy has been shown to alter activity in the medial prefrontal cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, the hippocampus, and the amygdala. These areas are involved in self-referential thoughts (“me”-centered worry thoughts), executive control, emotion, and fear.

After clearing the debris and filling your cup, the last step I give my retreat attendees for their preparation is to “Pour it Out”👇

This is the fun part:

đŸ€Â Do something unexpected in the form of service for someone you love. This could be a friend or family member. Someone in your circle. These acts of service should be done anonymously with no expectation for something in return. Essentially watch for a need, and then fill it.

đŸ€Â Provide an act of service for a stranger or someone you don't know.

đŸ€Â At the end of each day for a week, record in your journal three things that you are grateful for.

đŸ€Â Pay attention and identify a need or a problem in your area or circle of influence. Watch for something that you could see yourself doing to contribute to the solution. Include this request in your daily prayers.

Once completed, take the time to capture in your journal how completing these assignments impacted you. What the experience felt like and if you would do it again.

Have you ever planned and sacrificed hoping for an amazing family weekend that strengthens family relationships only to be disappointed and have it end in bickering, anxiety, opposition and more distance? Here are some tips to help you make the most of the upcoming Labor Day Weekend:

▫Involve your children in the planning! Put older children in charge of a day’s plans and have them submit them for approval from the whole bunch.

▫Be flexible. Even the best laid plans have issues come up. A parent’s anxiety can do more to ruin a trip than an oppositional teens when we struggle to just roll with the punches.

▫Lower your expectations. When we have an ideal picture of what the trip will look like we put unrealistic expectations on our kids. Expect things to go wrong, expect some bad moods, expect pushback. When it happens you won’t be disappointed and you will be better prepared to manage your own emotions.

▫It’s really not about the destination. Set an intention for the trip. What do you really want to have happen? What memories do you want to create?

▫Make agreements before you leave. Have a mini family meeting to discuss points of agreement on things like technology use, snacks, accommodations, and stops along the way. Choose an audiobook that the whole family might enjoy as you are traveling.

▫Pack snacks! Enough said.

▫Be spontaneous. If someone comes up with an idea and it sounds like a reasonable one, don’t be afraid to go with it!

▫Keep some surprises up your sleeve. Treats you don’t usually allow or other things your kids may not expect.

▫Watch for problems that arise along the way and involve your children in the experience of solving it. They will be more engaged and appreciative of the process.

Happy travels!

What would you do if you had more faith? I asked myself the same compelling question. As I pondered and prayed, Emerge & Become was the answer.

When it came time for me to design my visual brand I knew I needed to somehow paint the picture of emerging and becoming. I went back and forth with ideas and kept coming back to sunflowers. I love how the young blooms open up and follow the sun. It’s a perfect metaphor for how we emerge and become as WE seek light, and follow “the Son of God”. Everything about these unique flowers illustrated the process of emerging and becoming.

Are you ready to ask yourself the question “What would I do if I had more faith?” Are you tired of allowing fear and negative beliefs to decide your life’s course? If you’re ready to lean into your faith and trust that good things are in your future, reach out and learn more about my counseling and retreats.

It’s never too late to Emerge and Become!

Step 1: Clear the Debris

When preparing to attend an Emerge & Become Retreat where we will clear the emotional debris, I encourage attendees to first clear the physical debris in their lives. Here’s how:

First, choose a specific and measurable area in your home and clear it of any unnecessary clutter or debris. Organize the items that you choose to keep. As you make decisions about what to keep and what to throw away, ask yourself if the items are critical, necessary, meaningful or bring you joy, and if not and you choose to keep it anyway, acknowledge why. Take before and after pictures. Journal about what it felt like to clear out that particular space that has been on your mind, irritating or inhibiting you or creating unneeded clutter.

Then, choose one thing that you feel strongly about cutting out of your life. This might be a bad habit, something you use in excess or is unhealthy etc. It may include a social media fast, eliminating gossip or negativity, abstaining from alcohol, coffee, sugar or flour for two weeks. Choose something that will help you strengthen the practice of placing your spiritual self/soul in control over your physical body, essentially building spiritual muscle. Journal about about your choice and anything you notice during those two weeks.

Let’s get to clearing out these cluttered spaces: When you feel the difference, it will inspire you to take on the sometimes more dark and difficult spaces of your soul!

Stop buying all the negative thoughts your brain is selling. Here are some ways to start changing destructive internal beliefs:

▫Practice Mindfulness - Being aware of your thoughts and the type of thoughts you're having is the first step in being able to change them. Try 8 minutes of mindful breathing as a helpful replacement.
▫Practice Gratitude - Training our brains to watch for the good things in a day, in a life, in a child or spouse changes our perspective, and our perspective shapes our reality. Keep a gratitude journal by your bedside and write in it daily.
▫Clear Your Mind of Debris - Argue with your negative thoughts, faulty self-beliefs, and assumptions. When you realize a negative thought has entered your mind, ask yourself, "What else could be true? What else could be going on? What do I choose to believe?” Just because your initial thought/assumption is negative, doesn't make it true.
▫Make a List of Affirmations - Choose at least 4 and write them down. Repeat them out loud every morning and every night. Things such as, "I am so much more than these negative thoughts. I am worthy. I am important and I matter. Day by day things are getting better. God is aware of me and will come to my aid.”
▫Make a List of Your Values - Choose 10 that are of significant importance to you. When negative emotions arise accept them as normal, but make decisions about how you will think and act based on your values.
▫Focus On a Positive Future - Allow yourself to wish and dream. Take those dreams and start to define what success looks like for you. Reject negative or critical thoughts or beliefs.
▫Pray for Strength and the Ability to Focus in a More Positive Direction - Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you. Move forward with this new vision of your self.

As always, I’m here to support you on your journey. You’ve got this!

What is faith-based counseling? Faith based counseling invites you and I to combine our faith in God/Higher Power and invite that power to be a part of your healing. While my counseling services are open to all, if you believe in a higher power, particularly in God, as people of faith we can work together to assess the role that faith plays in the particular issues you may be struggling with. Sometimes finding joy involves making peace with a God we have been battling with. I understand a faith based approach is not for everyone, and have years of experience working with individuals who prefer a customized more person-centered approach. There is room for all.

Internal Action vs External Action: Where do you start when tackling depression👇

Internal Action happens as you notice your negative thought patterns and make efforts to change. External Actions are specific, measurable actions you can take that will jumpstart change even when you don’t yet feel like it. Internal change helps you train your brain to think like a happy person until you can feel happy. External change helps you take actions that change your physiology in a way that makes it more likely that feelings of happiness and peace will occur.

The combination of both is what drives true change on your path to healing from depression.
