We know we’ve said it before—and we’ll definitely say it again (sorry, not sorry)—but we are obsessed with a good sensory bin! 🙌

🧠🗣 Why are sensory bins so amazing for speech and language development? Let us remind you! 👇
They’re not just fun—they’re powerful learning tools. As kids dig, scoop, and explore, they’re also:

✨ Building vocabulary – Words like “scoop,” “squishy,” “buried,” “rough,” and “soft” naturally come up
🗣 Following directions – Think “Find the blue button!” or “Put the flower next to the bee!”
💬 Expanding sentences – If a child says “hippo,” we model: “I found a purple hippo!”
🧩 Learning concepts – Big/little, empty/full, in/out… all through play!

🌟 Bonus: Sensory bins are great for fine motor skills too! Scooping, pinching, pouring, and grasping build hand strength for important tasks like writing, buttoning, and cutting.

💸 Extra bonus: They can be super affordable! Many bins can be made with simple items you already have at home.

We know it’s common for parents wonder if their child’s speech and language skills are developing as they should. By age 2, most toddlers:

🗣️ Say at least 50 words
👂 Follow simple directions
💬 Start combining 2 words (“more milk”)

These are just three of the milestones we are looking at when evaluating speech and language skills. Every child grows at their own pace, but early support can make a big difference. Children are expected to fully acquire these sounds in conversational speech by the end of the listed age. If your child is having difficulty producing sounds that should already be developed, it may be time to schedule a speech evaluation.

❗FYI- Even if your child didn’t qualify for school-based services, they may still benefit from outpatient speech therapy! Outpatient services can offer more individualized support and earlier!
📚 A 2020 review by Crowe & McLeod found that most English consonants are acquired by age 5, reinforcing how important it is to catch delays early.
