MDSCAA Senior Companion Program

MDSCAA Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program serves Menominee, Delta and Schoolcraft Counties. Their efforts are aimed at helping others live fully independently.

Senior Companion Volunteers add richness to the lives of their clients, while providing access to the community, including grocery shopping, transportation to medical appointments and opportunities for socialization. In addition to improving the lives of their clients, Senior Companions find their lives enriched through service to others. Senior Companions serve up to 40 hours each week or an average of four hours a day. The hours are flexible, but most companions are with their clients both morning and afternoons. Senior Companions receive a modest, tax-free stipend to partially offset the cost of volunteering. They are covered by accident and personal liability insurance while serving: receive an allowance for transportation and meals; receive an annual physical exam.

The January 2025 In Service for the Senior Companion Program went well. Today we Shared the wealth (we had 3 winners). We had one Birthday for the month. We had handouts. And we went over them. New Time Sheets, calendars for February and March (we will be having an In Service bi-monthly). We went over the Volunteer Service Procedure Handbook briefly. We were given a Emergency Health Medical Form to fill out. We filled out an Evaluation on the Senior Companion Program, in which Linda and Elizabeth stepped out of the room while Rachel and Gayle received our evaluations. We had Sloppy Joes and chips for lunch (Great job Linda!). To end it all, Linda and Elizabeth did an income review for 2024 for each of us.
The winners for selling the Christmas chocolates were: Terry, Lorie, & Bill.
Reminders: When a site is closed (due to illness) you get unplanned hours. If they wear masks, you get PTO for not going. Holidays, you get 4 hours if you don't work that day, otherwise if you were suppose to work, you get that number of hours for the holiday. It was great to see everyone! See you in March :)

In Escanaba, located in da U.P. of Michigan, here is our Volunteer Spotlight: Don Sayklly started as a Senior Companion in February of 1998. He has volunteered at over 5 sites and has served 6 in-home clients in his 26 years of volunteering. Before he became a Senior Companion, he lived a very interesting life.
Don Sayklly was born in Escanaba, MI in 1934 and he was an immigrant son as his parents were from Lebanon. After high school, Don attended college at University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee He went there for a degree in Art Education. After attending college, Don volunteered to join the army. For the two years that he served, Don was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. After his two years of service, he returned home and got a teaching job at Gladstone High School as the art teacher for kids from second grade to eighth grade. Don taught art for 12 years. After his teaching experience, Don became a chef at many different locations, starting in Arizona. He was a chef at a Canadian owned hotel that had over 300 rooms. After 10 years in Arizona, he then was a chef in Milwaukee for another four years. In the 1970s, Don owned “The Prophet Restaurant” in Escanaba which served Lebanese cuisine, according to a newspaper article in 1982 that featured Don it stated, “His ethnic restaurant had evolved into one of the most unusual in the Upper Peninsula.”
We are happy and honored to have Don Sayklly on our team!

We had the Bucket Raffles, and the Share The Wealth Raffles. We played Pass The Bag (Left, Right) as Linda told a story, including all the Senior Companions. At the end of it all, we were given a bag of goodies, such as a long sleeved shirt, A word search puzzle, a candy cane of M&Ms, and a Christmas Card. And an envelope with our January Calendar and what's to happen at our next In Service Meeting. Thank you Linda & Elizabeth and your helpers Gail & Amy, for making this a wonderful Christmas Party for us. (Dec 11, 2024)

November's In Service for the Senior Companion Program went very well. We started off by buying tickets for “Share The Wealth.” Then we drew for winners. We had three winners. We had three Birthdays for this month: Al, Sue, & Donna. We were passed out folders with December's calendar in it, and The Christmas Party Invitation. We filled out a questionnaire. Remember, our Time Sheets that start on December 16 and end on December 27, are due on December 18 (due to the holidays). Remember, on the Holidays, the days you would have worked, you get same amount of hours for that Holiday. If you don't work on that holiday, you get 4 hours. Thanksgiving you get off Thanksgiving and the day after (Thursday and Friday). Christmas you get off December 24 & 25 (Tuesday and Wednesday). For New Years, you get off December 31 & January 1 (Tuesday and Wednesday). Our Christmas Party is at the Island Resort Casino on December 11, 2024. Be there by 11:30 AM to sign in. Our guest speaker was Amy Martin. She talked about signs in the elderly to be aware of. Thanks Amy! For lunch we had Linda's Homemade Chili with Corn Muffins, and cookies. Thanks Linda! Then we got a large box of Meats from Frapp's. Compliments of the Senior Companion Program. Thank you Senior Companion Program! It was great to see everyone at the In Service. Wishing everyone a really wonderful Thanksgiving. See you at the Christmas Party! :) (Nov 22, 2024)
