New blog for caregivers…

When I ask parents how they self-care during their child’s recovery I either get a look of frustration or simply “I don’t”. When all of your time and energy is dedicated to taking care of a sick child along with completing all of your OTHER responsibilities, prioritizing yourself takes a back seat- or let’s be honest it’s not even attempted. It is kind of silly for us to ask this given we know how much time has to be focused on recovery while also juggling your home, your career, other siblings, your partner, your parents- the list can go on. And how about parent’s without a partner – is self-care for anyone even possible?

Our School Program 📚

At Align we understand that while your child’s medical and psychiatric wellbeing is paramount you also have questions and concerns about their academics when they admit for treatment.

We work with Escondido school district and their Home Hospital team to have a teacher(s) on site one hour M-F to work with your child on credit/coursework completion. As we understand that falling behind in school can add even more stress. We incorporate more homework completion time daily so your child can do their best to stay on top of their studies while also focusing on their health.

💚 Here are a few reasons…

🗝️ According to the CDC, su***de is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15-24, and su***de is almost always preceded by mental health syndromes such as anxiety, depression, self-harm and substance use.

🗝️ Only about 30% of teenagers who endorse symptoms of depression are receiving treatment according to prevention group http://Suicide.org.

🗝️ Neurobiologically, the brain of a teenager is not fully developed and therefore its neuroplasticity - the ability to make new connections and create new habits - is greater than that of an adult brain.

🗝️ Because the teenage brain is not fully developed, key parts of the brain that regulate emotions, aid in decision-making and impulse control are not fully online. That, in combination with an increase in hormone activity as teens develop into adults, can lead teenagers to experience higher instances of emotion dysregulation, stress and conflict in their lives.

🗝️ Having teens practice effective ways to cope with their emotions helps rewire the brain and solidify new, more helpful habits in adulthood.

PARENT TIPS FOR MANAGING BINGEING AND PURGING

Supervision & Mealtime Rules are Key
Supervision can help parents prevent and disrupt these behavior cycles. Post-meal supervision involves staying with an adult in a common area for at least an hour after eating. No bathroom breaks or showers should be taken during this time. Parents can provide support during post-meal supervision by facilitating distractions (watching tv, chatting, going for a walk).

Stick to the Schedule & Help Break The Cycle
Sticking to a three meal, three snack schedule can help normalize eating, and eating every two to three hours can reduce the frequency of binge eating. The best thing you can do for your child after a binge eating episode is keep them on track with their eating schedule, helping them break out of the restrict-binge-purge cycle.

Incorporate Binge Foods in the Meal Plan
Many people binge on foods that they wouldn’t otherwise eat and have inaccurate beliefs about the effect these foods have on their weight and shape, even when eating in moderation. They also avoid foods that they believe they will binge on. Incorporating binge foods in your child’s diet can provide them with corrective learning experiences around the effects of these foods, help them practice eating binge foods in moderation, and reduce the strong physiological drive to overeat “forbidden” foods.

Stay Nonjudgmental
You child likely feels guilty and ashamed about their bingeing and purging. Do your best to talk to your child about these behaviors with empathy and a lack of judgment. If you walk in on your child engaging in a behavior, try to remain calm while firmly redirecting the behavior.

Implement Contingencies around Repeated Behaviors
An appropriate natural consequence to repeated bingeing and purging is to increase supervision and limit your child’s privacy and autonomy. This could include safety measures such as removing the door from their room or requiring supervised showers and bathroom visits, much like treatment facilities do to disrupt these behaviors.

But whatever you do, do not think about the pink elephant! Are you thinking about the pink elephant yet? If you’re like most people, the harder you try to suppress the thought, the stronger it comes back. A similar phenomenon happens when you deem a food “off limits.” The more you resist this food (and the more your overall food variety is limited), the more appealing it will become and the more likely you will binge on it when the opportunity presents itself.

Take time. Breathe it through. You can do this.
