Potty training isn’t actually happening later because kids are “not ready”… it’s happening later because the definition of normal has quietly shifted.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen milestone timelines move, expectations soften, and more of what used to be considered early signs of dysregulation get brushed off as “just a phase.” And as parents, it’s not your fault, you’ve been navigating a flood of mixed messages about what’s right, what’s gentle, and what’s “developmentally appropriate.”
But here’s the piece that often gets missed:
Potty learning is not just a behavioral milestone. It’s neurological.
It requires awareness, coordination, communication, and regulation. And when a child’s nervous system is overwhelmed or stuck in a stress response, those skills don’t come online as easily or as early.
So instead of asking,
“Why aren’t they ready yet?”
A better question might be:
“What’s getting in the way of their body being ready?”
Because when the nervous system is supported, things like potty learning, sleep, focus, and emotional regulation don’t need to be forced… they begin to happen more naturally.
This isn’t about rushing kids.
It’s about recognizing when delays are being normalized instead of understood and giving families a clearer path forward.
Love and appreciate you all ⚡❤️🔥
