Sadly, we often have to remind both family and friends to be patient with us. Our grief is FOREVER, and we will never be going back to our old self again. When a child dies, a parent is permanently changed by the trauma, the pain, and the emptiness of such a loss. Every day parents feel fresh pain......it's like reliving the death of our child over and over again. Quite often it takes years to move beyond the initial shock and pain of child loss to a place of a more gentle kind of grieving.

Nobody tells us that a large part of the grief of child loss is fear. This new fear is overwhelming. It is something we've never felt before. We're so afraid of the future without our child. We're afraid of all of the new emotions we're experiencing. We're afraid of being alone. We're afraid that we weren't enough of a parent for our child. We're afraid of every phone call. We're afraid of the nightmares. We're afraid of the panic attacks. We're so afraid, and often this fear is paralyzing.

Have you ever thought what it be like to spend just one more precious hour with your child? I think about it almost every day. I know that I'd say "I love you" over and over and over again. I know I'd say "I'm so proud of you. You made me the happiest mom in the world." I know I'd say, "You are so brave and so courageous." I'd say, "Please, please, please let me hold you and never let you go." If only......If only we had that one more hour with our child.

Happy Father's Day. They say it so easily. They don't understand what it feels like to be a child whose father has died. They don't understand what it feels like to be a father whose child has died. I wish I didn't understand either but I do.
