If you’re pregnant, we really encourage you to seek doula care if possible. Whether you plan to birth at home or in a hospital, doulas are an invaluable source of comfort, care, advocacy, and overall support in the pregnancy and birthing process — and in some cases they provide postpartum support as well. Check out breathofmyheart.org/doula-directory for a list of doulas we recommend. Or you can also reach out to for their recommendations — they have served hundreds of families in northern NM through their Yiya Vi Kagingdi Doula Project.

📊 Did you know? While home births still make up a small share of all U.S. births — about 1.4% in 2021 — the biggest growth in community births (home or birth-center) has been among Indigenous, Hispanic, and Black families. From 2019–2020 community births rose 30% for Black parents, 26% for Indigenous parents, and 24% for Hispanic parents. At Breath of My Heart, this trend reflects something we see every day: families reclaiming culturally-grounded birthing traditions by choosing midwifery care instead of a conventional hospital birth. Why? Because they want to feel connected, safe, and rooted. 🧡 Whether birthing at home or in our birth center, we ensure families receive culturally-relevant support, community, and choice.
