Doula Oblongata ✨DONA Certified Postpartum Doula
✨Certified Breastfeeding Specialist Nothing ever felt like, “This is it. This is what I want to do with my life”.

I’m originally from Massachusetts, but I’ve been living in Chittenden county for the past seven years. I spent years in the restaurant industry, but it was so defeating, and not what I wanted as a lifetime career. I obtained my business degree while working in multiple fields (non-profit world, healthcare, etc.). Nothing ever felt like my true calling. When I became pregnant, I decided I would sto

p working all together, as much as a financial burden as it would be, and focus on being a mom. Little did I know, this is when I would figure it all out. I became interested in becoming a doula almost immediately after my son was born. My husband went back to work, and I felt overwhelmed and lonely not having any family where I live and few friends close-by. Despite having about 20 years working with children, I was still scared that I just didn’t have all of the information I needed to be a confident parent. The unknown is scary, and there was a lot of unknown. I wanted to learn how to help others like myself, and the more I learned, the more interested I became. Being a new parent is no joke, and there’s so much that people don’t tell you. I decided that I want to help other families feel supported and educated to feel more confident and less scared/overwhelmed with being new parents.

Hi 👋🏼 I’m Dani.

So much has changed since I last introduced myself, so another intro was needed.

It’s been almost two years since I’ve started this journey, and to say it has taken off is an understatement.

So, here’s the latest:

I finished the certification process to become a certified postpartum doula through DONA International. I also started attending births.

BUT

I fell in love with lactation along the way.

I became a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist in 2024.

In the beginning of 2025, I decided to bite the bullet and work toward sitting for the board to become an IBCLC. This journey requires 1,000 hours of working as a Certified Breastfeeding Specialist in my community. I am over half way done with these hours 👏🏼

I started working with Essex Pediatrics as a family support specialist- helping their families with lactation and postpartum support.

I started learning about the recent fl**ge fit research, and I got hooked. I’ve taken over a dozen hours of specialized training in this evidence-based method of fl**ge sizing that has CHANGED pumping for pumping people.

I started collecting feedback from those I resized using this method, and I shared this data, along with the method, with UVMMC’s lactation team.

UVMMC’s postpartum unit is now implementing the use of smaller fl**ges.

Families’ lives are changing as a result.

If you’ve ever used a 24 or 28mm fl**ge (or even bigger) and had pain and/or swelling, you already understand why pain-free pumping matters.

I started offering virtual fl**ge fittings, and they have been a success. Making this more accessible is my goal.

It’s been hard. It’s been amazing.

I’m so grateful to be a part of this world. I’m so grateful to be allowed into these families’ homes & hospital rooms during the most vulnerable and transformative period of their lives.

🫶🏼

This is why I do this work.

Helping families feed their babies and watching their confidence grow as they realize they are more than capable.

Additional context:
Being a hospital LC is a tough job. There are often several patients at a time, and time with each family is limited. Many parents are coming directly from L&D—sometimes after extensive interventions—which can complicate feeding in the immediate postpartum period.

The hospital referred to in this review was not UVMMC.

I’m back! For this one post, because I couldn’t resist.

🧼 Did You Know? 🧼
You can turn leftover breastmilk into soap ✨

Let me preface by saying: I know it’s a privilege to have extra breastmilk.

As my breastfeeding journey is slowing down, I found myself with 17 ounces of milk in my freezer that my toddler refuses to drink. After trying (and failing) to find another family who could use it, I decided to turn it into soap instead 🤍

Breastmilk has some pretty incredible properties that make it not only amazing for babies, but also gentle and supportive for skin care.

Breastmilk contains:
✨ Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory components
✨ Fats, proteins, and vitamins that help moisturize and support the skin barrier
✨ Soothing properties that many parents find helpful for dry or irritated skin

Breastmilk soap is often used for things like:
• Dry or sensitive skin
• Mild irritation or redness
• Baby acne
• Diaper-area care
• Eczema-prone skin

First, a little preface: MOST families don’t have extra breastmilk on hand, and that’s completely normal. 💧 But for those who do—whether it’s just a little leftover, or even milk that’s been in the fridge a couple days too long—there are actually some creative ways to put it to use!

👉🏽 Donate (if it’s within guidelines)
👉🏻 Soap or skincare
👉🏾 Milk bath (great for baby’s skin)
👉🏿 Keepsake jewelry
👉🏼 And more—breastmilk has so many uses!

Just when you think breastmilk couldn’t get anymore magical 🪄🦄

Black Breastfeeding Week isn’t just a hashtag or a trend. It’s a reminder—of the disparities that exist, the resilience of Black families, and the role we all play in building a more equitable perinatal landscape.

Here’s why:

🖤 Representation matters. 🖤
Black families deserve to see themselves reflected—in providers, imagery, stories, and support spaces. Not just during this one week, but always.

🖤 The disparities are real. 🖤
Black parents face higher rates of: birth trauma, infant mortality, unnecessary formula supplementation, and lower breastfeeding support + initiation rates

These gaps aren’t about biology—they’re about access, bias, and systems that weren’t built for everyone.

Celebrating Black Breastfeeding Week is one small way to say:
“We see you. We support you. We’re committed to better.”

🖤 Because equity isn’t an add-on to our work—it is the work. 🖤

At Vermont Birth Network, we’re here to listen, uplift, and continue building a connected, inclusive network where Black families are not just welcomed, but centered and celebrated.

I’ve been busy.

So busy.

Being a stay-at-home mom while starting my business and working toward my IBCLC has my minutes and seconds jam-packed. It’s exhausting—but I truly love it. 💕

That said, I have some big business updates to share!

✨ First: I’ve officially accepted a role at Essex Pediatrics as a Family Home Support Specialist! I was once a new mom who leaned on these very services, and now I get to provide that same support to other families. Full-circle moment!

✨ Second: I just submitted my 59-page application to to (hopefully 🤞🏼) become officially certified as a Postpartum Doula. This has been over a year in the making, and hitting “submit” feels like such an accomplishment.

I’m beyond excited for these milestones and to be moving one step closer to my goal of becoming a board-certified lactation consultant. 👏🏼

International Breastfeeding Week is almost over, and I haven’t posted a thing 🙈

I often reflect on how little I knew about breastfeeding before I became a breastfeeding mother.
The answer? Almost nothing.

I didn’t know how physically and emotionally demanding it could be.
I didn’t know how breastfeeding could make the nights feel longer, and the sleep even shorter.
I didn’t know how much of myself—my body, my time, my energy—I would be giving away.
I didn’t know how deeply it would challenge my identity, my independence, my mental health.
I didn’t know the loneliness that can come with doing something so natural, yet so often unsupported.

But I also didn’t know:
💧 That breastmilk is living, filled with stem cells, antibodies, enzymes, and hormones that adapt to my baby’s needs in real time.
🛡 That it protects against infections, chronic illness, and even improves mental health outcomes—for both baby and parent.
🌱 That the act of feeding—at the breast, chest, or bottle—can bring powerful comfort, safety, and connection.
🌟 That my body is capable of something extraordinary.

I didn’t know how much I’d learn, grow, and transform through breastfeeding.

That lived experience is what grounds me now as a lactation professional.
It helps me support others with compassion and honesty.
Because I know how underprepared so many parents feel.
Because I’ve lived the doubts, the pain, the quiet victories.

To the parents who breastfeed, chestfeed, pump, combo-feed, donor-feed, or tried and didn’t get the support they deserved—

💛 You deserve recognition, respect, and real support—not just during International Breastfeeding Week, but always.
