Despite the raw, rainy weather, residents and staff came together for a successful cleanup effort. While the Essex Meadows campus was already looking its best, there was still plenty to collect along the surrounding roads — and our volunteers rose to the challenge. We had our largest turnout yet. Thank you to everyone who participated and made a difference.

Congratulations, Hikers, for completing a rigorous four-mile hike, 340 feet of elevation change, through the Preserve. The weather was overcast, not nearly as warm as earlier in the week, and a perfect temperature for hiking. They began their hike at the West Preserve Parking area and followed the Red trail. Along the way, they stopped briefly at the Suellen Kozey McGuin Memorial. From there, they headed down to the end of Pequot Swamp Pond, then back along the Blue trail to the Yellow trail and back to Essex Meadows.

Saturday was one of those 10-out-of-10 days—absolutely perfect for a hike. The Hiking Club headed out to Canfield Meadow/Woods for a 3.5-mile trek.

There was so much to enjoy: sweeping views all the way to Long Island Sound and Plum Island from the viewing platform; exploring what seemed like miles of winding rock walls—remnants of former farmlands now reclaimed by mature “climax” forest; and the beautiful walk up the Blue Trail alongside a lively stream cascading over rocks.

In addition to the hike, several residents joined the Essex Land Trust event to explore a vernal pool in the Preserve.

Simply a perfect hike.

The EM hikers had a perfect spring morning for a hike, with the temperature reaching 70 degrees. They were joined by two of the residents' visiting grandchildren.

They walked the Green Trail around the Turtle Creek Preserve for 1.1 miles. While a few needed to return to Essex Meadows after that section, the rest continued on for an additional 1.7 miles. They followed the Blue Trail and then the Orange and Red Trails, making their way up and over the highest point at the center of the property.
