*Dialysis/CKD Friendly Gift Guide*

Are you searching for the perfect holiday gift for someone with CKD? Well, you’ve come to the right place! Here are a few thoughtful gift ideas for family or friends with Chronic Kidney Disease or on dialysis!

-Cookbook for Chronic Kidney Disease Patients or People on Dialysis

Patients on dialysis are often given dietary restrictions to help protect their kidneys. Kidney friendly foods should be lower in sodium, phosphorus, and potassium. It can be quite challenging coming up with different recipes that follow these guidelines. Search online or at your favorite bookstore for renal diet cookbooks for patients on dialysis. There are many to choose from that have excellent reviews. You're sure to find the perfect one! They will love it!

-Blanket or Throw

Giving a blanket or throw is a great option for those on dialysis. This will help keep them warm during treatment while reminding them of you! Feel free to personalize this in any way such as adding custom stitching, patching, or even making it yourself! An added thoughtful touch is to make sure it’s machine washable!.

-Clothing

Having comfortable clothes for dialysis can make a huge difference. Finding cozy items that are dialysis friendly can help make your loved one more comfortable during treatment. Look for items that have zippers and/or stretch for easy port access.

-Book or Magazine

Patients are often at treatment for two to four hours and gifting them a book can help to pass the time. Find out if your loved one enjoys reading mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and or romance. They may even prefer an activity-related book such as a word-search, coloring book, and or puzzle book! There is a book or magazine for everyone!

Happy Holidays!

Dialysis, Debunking Myths

Are you or a loved one being recommended for dialysis? If so, let’s filter out myths that surround dialysis.

Dialysis is a treatment that removes excess fluid, toxins, and waste from your body if your kidneys can’t do this on their own. Without this ability, your body would retain waste that would poison your blood. So dialysis is a life saving treatment! Over 500,000 Americans are on dialysis.

There are two types of dialysis, hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). Hemodialysis requires an access site in your arm and peritoneal dialysis requires an access site in your abdomen. Hemodialysis is typically conducted in a dialysis center on a regularly scheduled basis (3x/week) with nurses specially trained to administer it for you and your doctor visits you there. PD is done on your own time, at home, under certain conditions, and you have monthly appointments with your dialysis physician and nurse. This allows many people to keep their jobs.

Which type of dialysis is best for you? That depends on many factors, most importantly, your overall health condition and your lifestyle. Dialysis may seem mysterious, even frightening, at first, but not to worry! Below are some debunked myths to help you stay strong and positive about this life-saving treatment that can help restore your energy and sense of well-being.

1) Dialysis treatment is painful

- False

2) Dialysis is not affordable

- False

3) I can eat and drink whatever I please now that I am on dialysis

- False

4) Staying consistent with my prescribed schedule for dialysis is not important

- False

5) I will never be able to travel or work again

- False

6) PD is not an option for overweight patients

- False

7) My doctor’s at CKHC only want the best for me

- True!

At CKHC we encourage our patients nearing dialysis first and foremost, to get on the transplant list. The second option we promote is to get evaluated for peritoneal dialysis, with hemodialysis being an excellent option as well. Your doctor here will guide and support you. He’ll help you move toward the decision, so you can prepare well in advance for the road ahead, and make the decision that’s best for you.

Trick for Halloween Treats!

Do you plan on enjoying delicious treats this Halloween? Let us help you identify kidney safe candies this season! Everyone enjoys a sweet treat from time to time and having CKD or ESRD shouldn't stop you from doing so. When choosing a candy, it's most important to consult with your health care team and to read the nutrition fact panel.

Here’s the “trick”: When reviewing the nutrition facts, be sure to identify the levels of sodium, phosphorus, and potassium. If these levels are low, they are considered safe to enjoy in moderation. Hard, chewy, and gummy candies are better for our kidney patients compared to those that contain solid chocolate, nuts, and or caramel.

Preferred candies:
Candy corn
Butterscotch
Jellybeans
Lifesavers
Chewing gum

Candies to avoid:
Chocolate bars
Chocolate covered nuts
Chocolate peanut butter treats
Toffee

Even if you’re just passing out candy to local trick-or-treaters this year, still choose kidney safe candies in case you're tempted to join in on the Halloween spirit!

Happy Halloween!

*If you are diabetic or following a low sugar diet, please consult your physician and do not eat candy at all unless guided by the physician managing your condition.
