Did you know that if you’re employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you might be eligible for the PSLF Program? The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you’ve made the equivalent of 120 qualifying monthly payments under an accepted repayment plan, and while working full-time for an eligible employer.

It's called the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, a government program that encourages people to give back to their communities by forgiving their student loans!

Check it out.

February is Black History Month as well as Ethnic Equality Month.

Every February, the United States highlights Black History Month to honor the rich and impactful contributions of African Americans to the United States. This month serves as a reminder of not only the difficult and traumatic beginnings but also the rich tapestry of traditions and culture that transformed a nation.

Ethnic Equality Month is a time to reflect on our differences and commonalities. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about the reality of racial and ethnic inequality and how discrimination persists. By celebrating our differences and learning to recognize and work toward equality, Ethnic Equality Month seeks to usher in a more just future.

February 20th is Presidents’ Day

Presidents’ Day is a federal U.S. holiday celebrated annually on the third Monday of February. The holiday was originally created to celebrate George Washington's birthday, the first President of the United States. In recent years, the holiday also celebrates the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, February 12, and recognizes the contributions of all U.S. presidents, past and present. (This is not an Emergence paid holiday, but you may take PTO. Schools, banks, and other federal and municipal agencies will be closed this day.)

February 20th is also World Day of Social Justice

World Day of Social Justice, internationally observed on February 20 each year, recognizes the importance of social justice and the equitable treatment of all people. Launched by the United Nations (UN) in 2009, the Day raises awareness around injustice, focusing efforts on eradicating poverty, minimizing unemployment, achieving gender equality, and championing human rights and social protections. World Day of Social Justice celebrates the strides society has made to ensure equitable treatment for all while highlighting the work that still needs to be done.

Celebrate our differences, applaud our successes, and strive for a brighter future for all.

The Only Way to Manage Other People’s Egos is to Manage Your Own.

Next time you find yourself triggered and feel the need to dig your heels in and defend your position, start asking questions. Instead of standing your ground, get curious. Don’t assume you understand the other person’s perspective.

Questions that help manage the egos are:
• Why does this matter to me? To the other person involved? To the community?
• What is the real emotion I’m feeling? What are the beliefs attached to it?
• Where am I being stubborn or trying to sell my perspective? Does it really matter?
• Are my behavior, beliefs, and mindsets intentional? Am I holding my integrity?
• Am I placing judgement, blame, accusations, or assumptions onto someone else? Why?

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” - Desmond Tutu.

Emergence makes the choice to share the burden of systemic racism, implicit bias and inequality, to leverage our privilege and platform to speak on injustices, and to challenge racism in our daily lives. In light of these recent tragedies and our community response, Emergence affirms the pain endured by communities of color - especially Black Americans. Our hearts are heavy as we join our community in mourning the loss of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many others as a result of systemic racism and implicit bias. The right to live without discrimination or fear of harassment is a basic human right. We believe no one should fear for their life or safety because of the color of their skin, and we recognize that words are not enough: we need change. All of us share the responsibility to end systemic oppression by fighting for an inclusive society.

We stand in solidarity against injustice, racism, and discrimination. Emergence will continue to be mindful of the need for change, and will raise our voice toward the end of institutional racism in our systems of justice and power. We will continue to resist the bias held against all marginalized populations, as this is what our work is all about – promoting justice and equity for all our clients, their families and for all the communities we serve in our actions, our work and our partnerships.

Black, LatinX and People of Color communities deserve our support. There is no way to overstate how systemic oppression, racism and implicit bias have disproportionately impacted the mental health of the Black and Latin X in our community. It is our honor and moral duty to be actively anti-racist in our work for and on behalf of the mental health and substance abuse recovery community. True recovery and mental health require racial justice and freedom from violence, repression and institutional injustice. We support the Black and Latinx community in demanding equality, and commit to using our privilege to do this work.

We are here with you in love and solidarity.

‘Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.’ - Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall

According to the CDC Global Health Initiative, today is World No To***co Day! Do you still struggle with to***co use? E-cigarette use has gone up and studies show the importance of modeling healthy behaviors for young people can make a huge impact on whether they use to***co in the future.

Need help? We're always here: 541-393-0777

"Data from the Global Youth To***co Survey (GYTS) show that at least 14 million young people aged 13 to 15 years across the world use to***co products. The to***co industry spends tens of billions of dollars each year on global advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.

How Parents, Educators, and Health Care Providers Can Help Protect Youth

Parents, educators, and health care providers all play an important role in protecting young people from the use of all to***co products, including e-cigarettes.

For example, they can serve as role models by not using to***co themselves. They can talk to young people about the harms of to***co. Parents and family members can adopt to***co-free policies at home. Educators and teachers can adopt and enforce to***co-free policies at school. And health care providers can counsel young patients against the use of any to***co product."

The programs offered at EMERGENCE are designed to be individualized and accommodate clients with special needs from offering weekend evening groups, for the working adult, as well as sessions in the day for those with childcare barriers. We offer assessment services to help meet client needs and place them in the appropriate level of care, whether it be outpatient or intensive outpatient services or individual and family therapy. Treatment services are offered in outlying areas to make access to treatment more available to clients. Our programs build on client strengths to empower them towards change in the recovery process. We offer low cost and sliding fee scales to help make treatment more affordable. Our counselors collaborate with community resources in order to coordinate services with employers, physicians and courts if needed.

EMERGENCE has offices in Lane and Linn-Benton counties. We work with the Lane County Mental Health Court, Lane County Treatment Court, Lane County Parole & Probation in collaboration with Sponsors, Oregon Gambling Helpline and provide DUII Diversion services. Our Odyssey Community Counseling location provides mental health counseling and medication management with a variety of specialized modalities including C-DBT, EDMR, WPATH, dual diagnoses and a 24-hour crisis hotline and DBT skills phone services.

Our staff come from many walks of life. We seek those who have historically had trouble in the workforce: candidates with justice-involved backgrounds, who are in recovery or have experience as or working/living with Veterans would really bring a lot to our work - as well as the idealistic, practical or those with a passion to serve. We offer flexible schedules, great benefits and education opportunities. If you're interested in learning more, feel free to message us!
