2024 KWC Satisfaction Survey Closes July 14

The Ko-Kwel Wellness Centers (KWC) in Coos Bay and Eugene invites you to provide feedback on services and activities in our Satisfaction Survey. This is the final week to participate and have a chance to win a prize.

The last weekly drawing will be held Monday, July 14 for yoga mats then the survey will be deactivated. The grand prize drawing for a $100 Amazon gift card will be held on Friday, July 18. Winners will be notified by KWC staff.

KWC Welcomes New Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Elizabeth Barrera

The Ko-Kwel Wellness Center is delighted to announce that Dr. Elizabeth Barrera, DO, will be joining our team as Chief Medical Officer (CMO)!

Dr. Barrera is dual board certified in Family Practice and Addictions Medicine. She has over a decade of experience that will benefit the Opioid Treatment Program in Eugene, as well as our Primary Care services in Coos Bay and Eugene.

Dr. Barrera completed her undergraduate education at UCLA with a degree in Psychology with a specialization in computer programming. She attended Western University College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific where she completed a pre-Doctoral teaching fellowship in manipulative medicine- using hands-on techniques to allow the body to heal itself. She completed her Family Medicine with Obstetrics Residency and a post-doctoral fellowship in Addiction Medicine with High-Risk Obstetrics at the University of Washington. Dr. Barrera also has a Master of Public Health from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health where she specialized in health policy and management.

Dr. Barrera has been Medical Director to multiple Opioid Treatment Programs in the Los Angeles area and has an unwavering dedication to providing patient-centered and holistic healthcare.

For the past six years, she has served a fundamental role as Chief Medical Officer promoting the integration of behavioral and physical health for Medicaid managed care populations in Washington. She has served on the executive council for Elevance Health in both Health Equity and AI/AN Tribal Health at the national and state levels.

She and her family are looking forward to making the Oregon Coast their new home.

New Tai Chi Classes Start in September-Zoom Option Available

A 10- week Tai Chi class, perfect for beginners, will start on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The classes are free and are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 am - 11 am at the CIHA warehouse in Coos Bay.

• All fitness and ability levels welcome
• Open to all ages
• In-Person at the CIHA warehouse
• Online via Zoom link

Big news for PRC members!

We are excited to introduce our new team member, Shanna Sheaffer! Shanna has joined us as an Executive Assistant in KWC Coos Bay. She brings with her exceptional structure, organization, and communication skills. She has earned an associate’s degree and is enrolled with Ashworth College to complete her Bachelors. Shanna has a wealth of experience from previous positions as Executive Assistant at Bay Area Hospital, a contract manager, and a meeting facilitator.

Shanna was born and raised in the Coos Bay area, and she looks forward to learning more about the Coquille Tribe and working within its vibrant community. She enjoys camping, hunting, and spending quality time with her family – especially her adorable grandson, Karson, who Shanna describes as “my light and inspiration.” Shanna has a very supportive husband named Wally, and a black lab named Remi.

You can find Shanna in KWC Coos Bay, working with Caryn Mickelson and Kelle Little in the Administration department. Please join us in giving Shanna a warm welcome!
