Little library books are getting more interesting around here. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, whole work helped push Lifestyle Medicine into national consciousness through the movie Forks Over Knives. And under his book, his wife's book. She is also a dynamic force with a LM focus. If you haven't seen the movie, watch it. Ever wake up on the wrong side of the bed? I am in the middle of a long grind that is disrupting my sleep and exercise. Then I drove into my office to find an unexpected donation to the practice. This inspired me to do a few minutes of reflection and savoring.

For this string of hospital shifts, I took the Amtrak and brought along the bike. Doctoring is sedentary. Being sedentary is as dangerous as smoking. People in the blue zones build in ways to nudge themselves into being active.

Here's a celebration at my efforts to nudge myself to metabolic and vascular health, i.e. no heart attack, stroke or dementia. (I combined this bike commuting with vegetarian eating..)

I remember starting training in 2021 as part of launching my own business with a different kind of medical practice. I couldn't even explain it. Thankfully, wellcoaches are super generous and helpful. Who would have thought I'd be invited as a guest to a wellcoaches podcast? Thanks @ for the invite! PeaceHealth fired the local Emergency Department group to replace them with a corporate staffing agency based out of Georgia. This type of decision causes grief, loss and betrayal.

"I really love this garden."
-said the older woman who had a noticeable stoop to her back and couldn't look up straight (aka kyphosis). She was trudging down the sidewalk. She said this garden made her happy and smiled big.

Well, this garden has been a little project of mine. It has a small azalea that blooms bright red, and a small Magnolia tree, and some wild grasses, and a HUGE climbing rose (not pictured).

I've always felt that it is both a privilege to have a garden and gift. The privilege is the ability to work the land and have the land to work. The gift is providing beauty to neighbors, a sense of calm and order.

Gardening is good for you. The Montessori Method talks about this a lot. A lot of people in Blue Zones garden. It is such a joy.

This garden hasn't been spruced up yet for spring. Although it feels like spring, it's not quite here yet.

More Blue Zones stuff coming here soon. (Blue Zones are areas with high concentrations of 100 year olds. I'm transitioning my Lifestyle Medicine practice to a Blue Zone slant).
