The amount of emotion surrounding this birth was felt so strongly. When mom was ready to push, the sea of tears surrounding me gave me goosebumps. When baby was born it was magical. Swipe to see the extremely rare instance where a pregnancy was successful and moms IUD was delivered with the placenta. How insane is that? Pregnancy is incredible and this baby was meant to be. Momma, you are a freaking rockstar!!

I’m here to tell you - no matter HOW you birth, you still brought a precious life into this world and you still deserve it documented and celebrated. I’m so incredibly thankful that covid restrictions are lifting and I can document every moment of your birth. Cesareans are beautiful too. Welcome to this world sweet Maverick.

Mommas -
No matter how you give birth, you still gave birth. It may have been an emergency situation, or the way you chose. You gave birth to the most beautiful, tiny being. Whether the way you gave birth was part of your birth plan, or the exact opposite, how it went was determined on the health and safety of both you, and your little one. While having things go off plan can be disappointing, don’t be too hard on yourself. Baby’s here, you’re here, and you did absolutely amazing. Cry, rejoice, and revel in the fact that you are a bad ass. You did it.

Can I bring my other kids to my maternity shoot? ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY!!! This gorgeous little girl was not having it, but we still managed to capture some amazing shots! Trust me, I’ve got those mom ninja skills to take a lot of photos really fast so we get some good ones! (Ps! This dress is part of my client closet!)

Walk into a room while I am supporting a birth and you might think that I am just sitting there doing nothing. I won’t be talking. I won’t be touching the client. I won’t be using anything in my bag.

So what am I doing exactly?

🪑 Watching mom’s breathing and sometimes breathing loudly alongside her to remind her to slow down her breath

🪑 Scanning mom’s body during the contraction to make sure that she isn’t holding any tension

🪑 Monitoring the temperature and lighting to create the peaceful environment that she desires

🪑 Calculating how long it has been since she emptied her bladder

🪑 Thinking about how long she has been in her current position and thinking about the next position that she might try

🪑 Timing contractions to see if they are longer, stronger and closer together

🪑 Thinking about when mom and her partner last had a snack

🪑 Reviewing her preferences to make sure that everything is going according to her plan

🪑 Giving the couple space to connect on an intimate level (allowing for oxytocin) and/or guiding the partner to be the lead support

🪑 Updating notes and capturing labor flow

Sometimes just being fully present is enough. Sometimes just knowing I am there in close proximity is all mom needs to be able to relax and focus on what she needs to do. Sometimes just holding space for them in an unbiased manner allows for a noticeable shift in the energy of the room.

One week ago, at midnight, I had the pleasure of meeting Alisha and Caleb for the first time after I got “the call” saying it’s time. Alisha was 3 days over due, her water was leaking, and she was so ready to meet her baby girl. On Sunday morning at 1:47am, after hours upon hours of pushing, this sweet girl finally made her appearance. Alisha is the strongest woman I know. She had the best support team and was just such a trooper through her very long, exhausting labor. We all laughed together, cried together, were sleep deprived together, and prayed over her and baby multiple times. Words can’t describe how honored I am to have been apart of such a vulnerable time with an incredible family and that I got to witness, support, and capture the birth of their first baby together. Also, can we talk about how this rockstar pushed out a 9lb 12oz baby?! What!!

It is with great joy that I ask all of us to come together and welcome Alisha and Caleb to parenthood. You guys sure did amazing!!

Birth is so incredibly sacred, and intimate. The moment where your life changes. The moment you’ve been waiting for for 9ish months. It happens in such a blur and is over so fast. Most moms say they forget this exact moment where baby takes their very first breath ever. I am incredibly honored to have been able to attend this birth, and meet this sweet baby. This momma was incredible given how her labor went. She is so so strong. I’m so glad I was able to support her and capture these unforgettable, irreplaceable memories for her. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when baby made their appearance.
