Mantel sits in the heart of the Kenton neighborhood. I met Karen McClelland at Cleveland High School. We were both art teachers. She was our ceramics teacher while I taught IB Art. We got to be good friends, but one day she got a wild hair to open up a boutique that specialized in local Portland artists and beyond, showcasing handcrafted jewelry, glassware, ceramics, candles, blankets, linens, handbags, and so much more, including my soap, Pumice and Stone Soap. Karen has a great eye for art and design and I think focusing on artists and the respect she has for handmade sets her apart from other retailers. Truly a mom n’ pop establishment. Did you know cold process shaving soap is not formulated in the same way as body soap? It requires a specific understanding of soap chemistry to achieve the lather that is creamy and stable, meaning you don’t have to keep dipping your shaving brush into the soap as frequently. Unlike standard cold process soap, shaving soap requires a high stearic acid content with specific ingredients like bentonite clay.

I’m super proud of my shaving soap and it’s a staple for many of my customers.

My friend Greta Montagne, herbalist, earth defender, farmer, and medic recently pointed out to me her foot care routine. I was inspired by her diligence and the intention she put into her feet. Her herbalist buddy attended a well known foot care clinic in Europe who then set out to open foot care clinics around the country. That got me to thinking about my own routines and how I wanted to pay more attention to my feet. She also mentioned toe flossing as part of a routine in which you thread your wash cloth between each toe to clean debris and bacteria that thrive in warm, moist environments between toes.

I now offer large pumice stones, coconut fiber foot brushes , wet or dry, Intensive Hand + Foot Cream with Mango Butter and Sea Buckthorn and next month, Minty Exfoliating Foot Soap with pumice powder and horsetail.

This is my latest shampoo bar. Horsetail is exceptionally rich in silica which strengthens a hair, strands, boosts, elasticity, and reduces breakage. On my website in four weeks.

I lot of friends are sick at home right now. I’ve been liberally gifting them shower steamers as part of a care package. Not everyone enjoys doing vapors over a steaming bowl. This is a great alternative because of the menthols and essential oils. It literally widens your nasal pathways and just feels healing. These are wonderful for a spa experience. I’ll be making more of the Eucalyptus today, sold out! I do have lavender available now.

I am so moved by a card I received in the mail the other day from a customer. The front cover is an original linoleum print done by her husband. Dear Terry… I love your soap so much. I ordered several to gift to friends. They arrived today and they are all wonderful! It is not easy to find beautifully handcrafted natural soaps and I am grateful to have found you and your company. It reminds me of when I would run into my student years later and they would tell me how much of an impact I had made on them. Really? Wow! I had no idea. Sure it’s about selling soap, but more than that it’s about creating community and having such a positive effect on people, however small or insignificant. That makes me happy.

Showing off my Coffee Exfoliating Soap made with organic fresh brewed coffee, coffee grounds, essential oils of cypress, cinnamon, clove, geranium, nutmeg. Ain’t she pretty? Activated charcoal swirl. Been talking some few days off instagram politics. Not giving up, just resting. Nothing about this is normal! Maybe my coffee soap will wake up a few sleepy heads!?
