Trina, Supervisor of Clinical and Implementation Services at TFCC, and Lindy, Consultant at TFCC, visited Bangor, ME and Portland, ME last week to deliver two Deeper Dive events! Together, they led discussions that explored Therapeutic Intensive Home (TIH) project updates and the TFCO model structure, treatment tools, and fidelity. 🎉

This was a valuable opportunity to share and learn about the work the provider agencies have completed, the work completed by the state, and a clinical overview of the TFCO model!

This event was sponsored by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with Maine’s Office of Behavioral Health, Maine’s Office of Children and Family Services, Maine’s Department of Corrections, Acentra Health, provider agencies, and TFC Consultants, Inc.

This fall, several of our youth reached major milestones, completing programs and moving toward independence. Moments like these remind us why this work matters.

At a recent graduation, one of our foster parents shared these words with their youth:

“You’ve worked so hard, been so brave, and learned to see life in a brand-new way. You’ve shown us that laughter and bravery can go together, and reminded us why we do what we do: to help kids find hope even when things seem dark. Always remember that there are people who care about you and believe in you.”

These moments, full of courage, love, and growth, are what make foster care so meaningful.

Every milestone matters. Every connection counts.

Site Visits are an important part of TFCO implementations! Their purpose is to provide coaching and ongoing training to team members with an emphasis on supporting the Team Leader role. Site Visits also provide opportunities for technical assistance and program evaluation. Activities during Site Visits are tailored to meet the specific needs of each team... and they often include a lot of fun, too! Here is TFCC Consultant, Piper, visiting team members from The Guidance Center. 🙂

In 2022, research conducted by Leslie D. Leve, Maria Schweer-Collins, and Elizabeth Bates found that the prevention of delinquency can have long-term benefits for both the individual and society. It was discovered that youth receiving the TFCO intervention are 5 times less likely to have child welfare involvement when they have children of their own.

View this recent (2025) TFCO journal article titled "The Association Between Intimate Partner Encouragement of Alcohol Use and Alcohol Use Among Females Formerly Involved in the Juvenile Justice System" by Avery Turner, Diana Jenkins, Maria Schweer-Collins, and Leslie D. Leve by clicking this link: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10935-025-00828-z.

The study consists of secondary data analysis from a study of female adolescents with severe and chronic delinquency who participated in a longitudinal study that investigated the efficacy of TFCO. Participants were randomly assigned to TFCO or usual group care services during adolescence. In TFCO, youth were placed individually with Treatment Parents who were trained to provide the participant with close supervision, mentoring, and consistent limits. Participants were followed through emerging adulthood, when they provided data on their alcohol use and the encouragement of their alcohol use from their intimate partners.

Given the evidence that the TFCO intervention program had positive impacts on homework completion during adolescence, an important next step is to investigate its role in promoting resilience on educational attainment and income level in emerging adulthood using a longitudinal design.
