It’s common to think that if we just push feelings down or ignore them that they’ll go away.
People try it all the time. But as therapists, we witness, both personally and professionally, countless failed attempts at this strategy.
“What we resist, persists.”
Emotions are going to surface, one way or the other. If we don’t give them space to be felt and expressed, then we lose any say in how they present.
We get physically sick, we lash out at people who don’t deserve it, we develop all sorts of anxious symptoms...
This is your invitation to feel the feelings. Any and all of them. Talk with someone, journal, schedule time for emotions...even literally. You will be so much better for it.
