If your low back feels achy and compact, this is the technique for you. Using my foot to pull the fascia from the base of the ilium and sacrum all the way up to the scapulas effectively stretches and lengthens the spine. Most of us tend to neglect our lower bodies. When I ask people, “Where are you noticing points of tension/pain/restriction?”, the majority reach for their neck and shoulders. (Me, too. I totally get it). However, when I start poking around the lower half, many are surprised of how sore they feel. Don’t sleep on lower bodywork! Restrictions in the feet, legs, hips influence how we feel in our upper bodies; never mind how much we ask our lower bodies to do: walking, running, crouching, kneeling, even sitting stagnantly takes a toll. That’s why I love implementing work like this. My clients are pleasantly surprised of how “open” and “alive” their legs feel… and how that all translates up top, too. After all, it’s all connected 🕸️ 🤍

I was certain I wouldn’t use much of the neck techniques I learned in the Intermediate Barefoot Ashiatsu class, but that material ended up being what I use the most. 🦶 I thought it would be strange using feet on the neck, but when I received in class and felt how amazing and effective the work was, I knew I had to be more open minded. Like all Barefoot Ashiatsu, the technique is deep and even, successfully loosening up connective tissue and muscle layers beneath. It looks a little goofy but I swear it’s 🤌🏻💛

Love this move to open up the chest — and consequently loosens up the shoulders and neck, too! 🤗

A wonderful way to target the QL (quadratus lumborum) muscle. A tight QL can be a result from poor posture, repetitive movements like bending, twisting, lifting, etc., and/or weakness in the core. I really enjoyed learning this technique from a side-lying position because I can specifically palpate and pin the QL with ease… and with the additional active movements of my client’s leg, the QL can release and soften even further. This is one of my favorite techniques I learned last weekend 🥰

One of the most common things I hear when talking about Thai massage to a client is “Oh, I can’t do that; I’m not flexible”. Well… just here to tell you: 1. Me either, and I give and receive Thai massage often. (If I can do it, so can you 😉) 2. This is exactly why you SHOULD. I promise we won’t get on the mat and I’ll fold you into a pretzel 🥨. We’ll work within your limits and gently increase your mobility & ROM. I think you’ll be pleased with the results 😌
