In today's blog, we dive into the importance of adequate nutrition for women with PCOS!

We want to make it clear that micronutrients are important for everybody. However, people who suffer from conditions such as PCOS may see increases in symptoms and disease severity when they aren’t getting the nutrients they need.

A few important micronutrients for PCOS include: ⤵️
Magnesium
B vitamins
Vitamin D
Omega-3 fatty acids
Zinc
Vitamin E

Vitamin B-6- Did you know you have billions of neurons in your body? It’s pretty amazing that you can wiggle your toes just by thinking about them. Vitamin B6 supports your nervous system in all it’s intricate wonder. It also helps you break down proteins into their smaller components called amino acids so your body can rebuild them into different proteins for a variety of jobs throughout your body. Another key function of B6 involves helping you access energy stored as sugar in your liver and muscle cells.

To maximize B6 in your diet, consider a hearty and warming shepherd's pie. By using potatoes with their skin for the top layer, you get more B6. Cook up your filling with ground chicken or turkey, peas, and spinach as your major B6 sources, and add onion, carrots, and celery for additional flavor and texture. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and herbs. Bake until warmed through and the potato layer at the top starts to brown.

You body is amazing and it uses nutrients like Pantothenic Acid to create the tools it needs to process and use other foods. This nutrient helps you convert the food you eat into energy. ⁠

To get more Pantothenic Acid in your diet, consider indulging in the old classic tuna salad sandwich or chicken salad sandwich. Both are delicious with avocado which boosts the Pantothenic Acid content. Shiitake mushrooms and sunflower seeds are also great sources of this incredible vitamin.

Happy Food Friday!

Here's on of our favorite breakfast ideas: ⤵️

Saute some Kale or Swiss Chard for 1-2 minutes,
then crack an egg on top of the greens,
sprinkle some sharp cheese like Parmesan or white cheddar and flip over once to cook the yolk.
While this cooks, make some toast with spread

Niacin (vitamin B-3) - What do poultry, fish, meat, and whole grains have in common? They provide your body with Niacin. Like many of our B Vitamins, Niacin also helps our body turn food into energy. Niacin is a key part of a coenzyme that is involved in more than 400 different enzymatic processes.

We all need more energy these days, right? Swapping between chicken, fish, and red meats and using whole grains helps our body get the right amount of this essential nutrient. If you want to feel like a professional chef, get a thermometer to help you cook your meats to the right temperature. A thermometer with a probe lets you prepare your meats exactly how you like them and keeps you confident you’ll avoid the possibility of food-borne illness.

Grab your favorite cut of chicken, season all sides with salt and pepper, and brown on the stove in a little bit of olive oil until the exterior is seared. Once you’ve browned your chicken on all sides, place it on an oven-safe baking dish (with your thermometer probe in the thickest part of the cut) and bake at 425’F until your thermometer reads 165’F. Now you have chicken ready to go for sandwiches, soups, or to eat on its own with some potatoes and veggies.

Riboflavin (vitamin B-2) - One of the things it’s easy to forget is that our body makes our blood cells inside of our bones. Specialized cells within our large bones produce red and white blood cells. Riboflavin helps in the production of those cells. It also supports functions within our other cells like turning food into energy. These are just two of the many functions Riboflavin plays within our bodies.

Three of my favorite sources of Riboflavin go well together: milk, bread, and almonds. For a fun weekend breakfast, use the bread of your choice to make french toast.

Mix together half a cup of milk, an egg, half a teaspoon of vanilla, a pinch of cinnamon, and nutmeg. Soak your bread in the mixture and cook in a pan on the stove until the egg is firm. Serve with almond butter and syrup or with butter, powdered sugar, and toasted almonds, and enjoy!
