Detoxification is the process your body uses to change waste products and potentially harmful substances into harmless compounds. While doing more intensive detoxification may sound like a good idea during active cancer treatment, it is not recommended while receiving chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or surgery. Intense detoxification protocols that include special diets or liver-supportive supplements can be physically challenging and may interfere with treatment. Remember that the body eliminates waste via four different routes: urine, f***s, respiration (breathing), and perspiration (sweating). There are easy ways to support these detoxification processes daily that will help support your overall health.

Here are five things you can do every day to support your body's ability to detoxify every day:
1. Hydration: getting at least 60 ounces of water daily is important.
2. Eat one meal with "Five Different Colors" daily. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as berries and squash contain cancer-fighting phytonutrients.
3. Exercise: This doesn't need to be hour upon hour spent at a gym. Studies have shown that 150 minutes of exercise per week (including walking) helps to reduce treatment-related fatigue, boost mood, and reduce the risk of multiple types of cancer.
4. Sleep: Establish a healthy routine and stick to it.
5. Breathe: Respiration is how we take healing oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide. But most people breathe only into their chest, and do not breathe into their diaphragm.

What are the risks of choosing supplements alone or with "Dr. Google"?

Alternative therapies could delay conventional curative therapies
• Herb-drug or nutrient-drug could have interactions with conventional treatment
• There could be a presence of toxic constituents or adulterants in poor-quality dietary supplements
• Unqualified alternative healthcare providers can be a source of misinformation and high costs.

Remember, your job is to get better.
An ND's job is to quickly identify the proper treatment based on the specific patient sitting before them. It is our privilege to help you sort through the information you collect in your quest to get better.

Research at MD Anderson reported that up to 80% of cancer patients use CAM and 63% use dietary supplements and 38 to 60% of patients with cancer taking complementary medicines do not inform their healthcare team.

At PIO, we know this can lead to a HUGE potential for drug-nutrient interactions, possible toxicities, and much more. We encourage full disclosure and education on the supplements, diets, and lifestyle changes you make in conjunction with your care. Having a care team member who can advise and support you with ALL aspects of your care is important.

The American Cancer Society sponsored the first-ever, randomized, controlled trial of community gardening at UC Boulder to see if this would increase exercise and fiber consumption.

The study found that those who started gardening ate more fiber, were more physically active, and saw significant reductions in stress and anxiety levels.

One more reason to get outside and get your hands dirty!

Reminder: Opportunity to Participate in a Research Study

We are looking for 20 volunteers without a cancer diagnosis to take a fermented wheat germ extract supplement for a month and have two blood draws completed.

PIO is committed to advancing evidence-based medicine by testing the supplement's impact on inflammatory markers and other lab values. Once this 5-week process is complete, there is a $50 Amazon gift card as a thank you for your participation.

Despite our best efforts to get in daily steps, many patients undergoing cancer treatment experience loss of muscle mass called sarcopenia.

Patients at the most risk of losing muscle mass include geriatric patients, patients taking steroids, and patients with fatigue or pain that limits their mobility.

What can lead to sarcopenia?
Lack of protein intake - as people age, they tend to get less protein in the diet, and with chemo, if you're not feeling well, you don't want to eat, you could lower protein intake.

Lack of exercise - Getting in 10,000 steps is a great start, but studies show that lifting light weights, focusing on gentle yoga, and stretching during cancer treatment will help keep muscles healthy.

Did you know? About 9,910 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2023. Childhood cancer rates have risen 1% yearly since the early 1970s but have stabilized since 2010. If you or a loved one is experiencing cancer as a child, follow our sister organization Chemo and Crayons, for more education and resources.

A recent study examined the impact of Qigong on cancer-related fatigue.

Qigong improved mood, ability to regulate emotions, and stress response. Qigong is an excellent opportunity to incorporate gentle, low-intensity movement with Qigong regularly.

No eating for 16 hours a day? I (Dr. Niesly) used to think that was too difficult. I loved my few sips of mocha in the morning and would get very fatigued if I didn't have something in my stomach by 10 AM. But intermittent fasting has become a dietary approach for weight loss, blood sugar control, and more. It can be easy to accomplish if done correctly and help you feel better quickly. When most people think of blood sugar, they think of diabetes. But high blood sugar levels are also associated with heart disease and an increased risk of developing breast cancer. High blood sugar can lead to elevated insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) in the body. These hormones are known to promote cell growth and division. Too much insulin and IGF are linked to both the development and progression of breast cancer. High blood sugar levels can trigger chronic inflammation and increase oxidative stress. These conditions can damage cells and DNA, which makes it easier for abnormal cells to form.

A February 2023 meta-analysis of intermittent fasting studies found that intermittent fasting has five additional benefits:

1. Patients who fasted 13 hours or more overnight reduced the risk of recurrence by 36%.
2. Reduces body weight, a well-known risk factor for initial breast cancer diagnoses and recurrence.
3. Restores insulin sensitivity since high insulin levels and resistance are associated with worse outcomes.
4. For patients undergoing chemotherapy, intermittent fasting around the time of chemotherapy has been shown to reduce fatigue, weakness, and digestive side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
5. Dramatic reduction in fatigue in women on maintenance therapy (aromatase inhibitors or Tamoxifen).

Working with thousands of clients over the past two decades has helped us realize that something as simple as not eating is an essential tool in cancer treatment and survivorship. Typically women are given recommendations about things they must do MORE of--sleep, exercise, etc... all of which take up more time. It's refreshing to get a recommendation with such a significant impact that is friendly to our busy schedules and finances.

Have you tried intermittent fasting? Reply and share your experience. We'd love to hear what it was like for you!

After cancer treatment, patients often want to know what they can do to prevent recurrence.

One test to consider a 'genomic profile.' We want to think our genes are perfect, but they aren't. How we eat, sleep, exercise, and the environment influences many. A comprehensive genomic analysis allows you to gain valuable insights into critical components of your health. You can learn to heal and understand the keys to healthier years ahead.
