Attended the screening of the amazing documentary 'The Brown Heart' today and had the privilege of meeting the documentary makers Dr Nirmal Joshi and Dr Renu Joshi. This was followed by engaging discussion with the documentary makers and panelists that included Dr Amit Guttigoli, Dr Richa Mittal MD , Dr Anandita Kulkarni MD, FACC Dr Vijay Kalaria and Dr Srini Potluri
'The Brown Heart' powerfully highlights the high risk of cardiovascular disease among South Asians and explores the complex interplay of genetics, lifestyle, culture, stress, and nutrition. As a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist, someone deeply invested in community health, the documentary resonated with me on both a professional and personal level.
Here is the link to watch it :
Key takeaways that stood out:
• South Asians develop heart disease at younger ages and lower BMIs
• Insulin resistance and visceral fat play a significant role
• Cultural dietary patterns, chronic stress, and sedentary lifestyle contribute.
• Prevention must begin early with awareness, culturally tailored nutrition, and lifestyle shifts
The panel discussion reinforced the need for community-based education, culturally relevant prevention strategies, and open conversations about heart health within South Asian families.
This is a must-watch documentary for every South Asian family. Awareness is the first step toward prevention.
Let us continue the conversation and take action for a healthier future.
A huge thank you to TIPSNEC, India Association of North Texas, US India Chamber of Commerce DFW for supporting this wonderful community event.
